about to put the front glass in the aquarium what do you think the best thickness of glass would be.. itls 23"x46" i was going to use 1/2" plate

I assume you making your own tank. If you can get it, go with Starfire glass. It is the low iron glass and doesn't have the green tint that regular glass has. It has clarity similar to acrylic.

i have heard that 1/2" is fine for 24" depth but garf website says 3/4" that double the price of the glass.. is that overkill??

Oceanic makes a 24" brick with 3/4" and Im sure they go over board to limit if not eliminate problems. My guess would be 1/2" is plenty and you will be bracing it also.
