Okay, so I have had my Oceanic 58 going for about 6-7 months and really got it stocked now. I have seen the current I have is continous and in the same directions. I'm really looking to change it up. I have a mag 5 return from sump that exits the overflow box in middle and closed loop blueline 800 that exits each corner in the back. I'm wanting to change it up and add some random current. I was thinking of getting rid of closed loop and adding tunze 6000 on one side or maybe a squid unit on my closed loop and put to four exits on each corner pointing to middle. Which one of these sounds like the best idea or do you know of something else I can add?

Anyone that has had experience with oceanic 58, what worked for you? Also the Oceansmotions squirt. How did this work? Do you recommend? Any drawbacks? I have read about them getting stuck if something gets into closed loop system? Everyonce in a while I use turkey baster to clean off everything and it clouds up my system, will this make the squirt seize?

Thanks,
Justin

Any current switching device (SCWD, Oceansmotion, etc.) can stop working due to Ca buildup or debris. I have both, the SCWD requires taking it completely out and soaking it in vinegar. The top can be taken off the OM (without removal if it is above the water line) to be cleaned. Mine did get stuck with sand particles, but only when the tank was very new (cycling) and large sand grains were being carried around in algae blooms.

I really like the OM Squirt - not maintenance free, but not far from it! I think the SCWD is a PITA to clean.

Your flow should be OK with an OM Squirt, they are rated up to about 1200 gph.

Plumbing from the OM can be "challenging", consider your PVC pipe skills before going this route ;)

I think I might go with the squirt. What is the weight of this device. I see a lot of pictures on the www.oceansmotions.com website but majority of them have the external pump on the ground with a straight shot up with pvc from outtake and the squid at the top. Is it heavy? It doesn't sway? Most look like they aren't secured to anything so had me thinking.

Also what is the benefit of having my external pump on the ground compared to about tank stand height behind the tank? I have been surfing and couldn't find any questions concerning this. Would I get a good increase in flow if I do this? It is a Blueline 800, the green pump.

Thanks,

The higher the pump, the less head pressure and better flow. However, some pumps will cavetate (sp?) [make bubbles] without more head pressure.

I have PanWorld 50 & 100 pumps on mine, and the pumps are mounted about mid-tank on a shelf - works fine.

The OM Squirt is very light, the plumbing is adequate to hold it in place without swaying.

OM Super Squirt is the way to go. I have v.3 and it's sweet. I also had the SCWD and it was ok. I would go with a super squirt. It can handle alot more than the regular squirt. I also have mine secured to my stand with zip ties. You can check out my DIY thread for the Reef One aquarium to see how I secured it. I have about 1000 gph going through it right now plus I just installed my closed loop. Flow is AWESOME. Also, a group buy is the way to go. I went in on one and I got mine for 175 shipped. Not bad at all.

i believe it's better to have your pump on the floor, because pumps have a much easier time pushing water than pulling it(if that makes sense to you) if the pump is off the floor, then gravity is acting on the water in the line running to the pump, this puts more strain on the pump.

How about some pics from those who have an OM Squirt. I just bought one and am looking for ideas on how to set it up in a 2ft cube.

This is a shot of it under the tank with the 4 returns going to the 4 corners.

This is awesome Pete, I had never payed much attention to the plumbing when I saw it in person. I was in awe with the corals. Nice
