Hey all

I have a few of these "creatures" growing in my tank. They seeming grew out of "nothingness." I am wondering what they are.

They kind of look like a ricordea when the sweepers/tentacles are gathered together. The sweepers/tentacles are translucent. The sweepers/tentacles often spread out far apart like it is searching for food. Sometimes it closes all the way up, sort of like an anenome. Currently it is about the size of pencil eraser when closed and a dime when open.

I appreciate the help!

Look like some type of Aptasia. Get some Joes Juice and nuke those little guys before the start to take over.

Go to this thread. On the 2nd page, I posted a drawing of that exact creature. The drawing is not in there anymore, but we discuss it. Not aptasia and not harmful.

Atleast I am not the only one who has them. Unfortunately, on that thread they are not named.

Can we get a scientific name or common name for this creature?

Thanks

Christopher

I think that is what the conclusion was, INSTAR gave some informative data, but we were never able to determine what exactly they were. There are just too many creatures in the sea :wacko . And just so you know, mine never got out of hand and took over the tank. In fact I haven't seen one for quite some time, but they are probably there. Wouldn't worry about it, unless you have small fish start dissapearing.

I just wanted to do a bit of research on this little guy. Unfortunately, without a name it is very difficult to find anything. I did read the info on the thread you provided but it only left me wanting more info. I appreciate the help its a start! :)

I have actually seen this in a few fish books. I can't remember the name but it is a type of mushroom that has no zooxanthellae and derives its food from filter feeding. They are VERY cool (in my opinion) but I have yet to see any fish store selling them and article stated only way to get them was through live rock and luck. Oh, no spot feeding is required and light is not required. Some can get colorful bulbs at the end of the arms too. If you are fragging any out let me know :)

Pseudocorynactics carribbeorum is the version with colored tips. Pseudocorynactics sp. is all that is listed for the version with white tips. Listed as a very good reef specimen but only grows to 0.5" diameter and prefers dimly illuminated tanks (lacks zooxanthellae) and is preyed upon by copperband butterflies and numerous shrimp particularly Lysmata species.

Book states no target feeding is necessary but they reporduce more rapidly if fed small pieces of fish.

I want some of these :)

I typed both Pseudocorynactics and Pseudocorynactics carribbeorum into Yahoo! and got nothing. Any other leads. Where did you find this information Thunderkat?

The book is "A Pocket Expert Guide Marine Invertebrates" by Ronald L. Shimek and it is found on page 118. Hope that helps :)
