overflow box

what do you know about over flow boxes? theres one that i found brand new for 45.00 and it comes with the hose and the sponge filter. is this pretty good? what else do i need with an overflow? i need some kind of an floater right, to keep it from over flowing if the power goes off?

oh, do i need my tank drilled or can i get away with not haveing it drilled?

If you go with and overflow box you don't need to have your tank drilled unless it's just for a closed loop system.

The water will only drain as low as the top of the overflow box. I normally get the tank filled the box in place along with the sump it's going into and let it drain until it stops by itself. This will give you an idea of how high to keep the water level of your sump at. Also do this after the return pump has been run one time since you may get some flow back through the pump that will throw the sump higher.

how much did he charge you? would this be an ideal setup for coral?

there is nothing wrong with an overflow, allthough I would think that a drilled tank is ideal. for many allready up and running tanks though, an overflow is all you can do.

yes, a properly constructed overflow box (I highly reccomend dan's products, they are awesome) has a siphon break built into it so that if you have a power outage it can't drain your tank. then it is simply a matter of making sure that you have more volume available in the sump than the overflow box can drain into it.
