at night, when only the moonlights are on, intermittently, we hear a noise coming from our tank that sounds like someone cracking his knuckles. i have looked many times with a flashlight, but no luck in the investigation. any idea what may be causing this?

It is probably a pistol shrimp or a mantis shrimp that came aboard on some liverock or possibly a coral?

You will probably want to catch him and get him out of your tank.

Just do a quick search on "Mantis Traps" for more info on how to catch them.

is it a hermit crab clanking around?

If it is a little pistol shrimp then he's not a problem. The mantis you'll want to get out.

Usually pistol shrimps will make multiple clicks whereas mantis shrimp will just be one click occasionally.

I used to have the same thing but i found out it was just the hermits that were falling on my glass bottom. Do you have sand in your display or is it barebottom?

SSB. i dont think its the hermits, if it is a mantis , what will it hurt?

it is probably a pistol, because it will make a click a second for 15 or 20 seconds.

Mantis shrimps are EXCELLENT predators. Once they get larger they can do alot of damage. There's a reason they call them thumb splitters.

Sounds like a pistol shrimp though.

Fish and inverts...never heard of them going after corals though I wouldn't doubt it with those monsters.

depends on what type of mantis, if it's a "smasher" it will kill your snails and crabs, if it's a "spearer" it will go after the fish, corals are probably safe though. i have several softies in with a 5" peacock mantis. see my gallery for pics.
