It's some type of coral, but I forget the name. I got several on my Tampa Bay rocks. They don't reproduce in your aquarium and more likely than not will eventually die off, so don't worry about them.

drat.. i rather like the little thing.. thou we feared it might be the dreaded glass anemone..
so.. not dangerous but can't expect it around for too long?

A little hard to tell in the pic, but it doesn't look like a glass/Aptasia to me. Probably harmless, keep an eye on it. If it puts out sweeper tentacles (long strings) and stings other stuff, then you may want to get rid of it. Probably just a little friendly hitchiker that will help you enjoy your new hobby :)

Just looked up the curly que anemone, and that appears to be what it is: all the info fits, as we did find it under a rock in an area of the tank with good current. It is a type of glass anemone, but not aiptasia i believe, so i think it might be safe for our tank. We don't have much in here yet, so at least it gives us something else to look at.
Thanks for the info all :)

That's not a curlyque anemone ( Bartholomea spp ) - I bet that animal has a hard skeleton if you look close enough at the rock.
Look up Phyllangia , Cladocora and Pseudocorynactis for genus that might be a closer match. The tentacles on that are pretty distinct.
What is commonly called 'curlyque anemone' is usually Bartholomea annulata as pictured here :

They are found in tropical atlantic / carribean areas.

I have several of those. they came in as hitch hikers from florida. i id'd them as some kind of star coral (if i remember correctly) they have reproduced in my tanks, seem to be very resilient. they have a luminescent green cast under actinics. same thing? if it is you will eventually see molar shaped coral skeleton. i think i can find a picture.
