I can't see the pics you linked (work blocks out the ones linked from some sites) but isn't it illegal to own Hawaiian Cleaner Wrasses? Those do not adapt to captivity and always die.

NICE!!!..I love that mystery wrasse!!

There is this small thing called IUCN Threatened Species Red List (dont know if you are familiar with it or not) That list shows all the animals of every kingdom that are in danger of extintion. The Hawaiian cleaner wrasse, or Labroides phthirophagus, is not on the list, therefore not in danger, therefore not illegal.

OK so from what I can gather Act 306 in 1999 made 30% of Hawaii's waters illegal to collect in. Im not finding anything that says cleaner wrasses are illegal to collect in the other 70%. As a matter of fact Im finding evidence to the opposite. The main study done says that their is an 18% difference in population density between the protected and non-protected sites. Which means that it they are carrying out this study people must be collecting...with permission assumably.

The following link is a report done by the Hawaiian government. Do a ctrl+f and type in cleaner wrasse to find the specific info regarding this species.

If anyone can find any other info let me know!!

When I used to live in Hawaii I had all Hawaiian fish in my tank (except for my clown fish and cleaner wrasse) and I asked the LFS about Hawaiian cleaner wrasses and they all told me they were illegal to collect. Maybe they were back then because I looked and see multiple people selling them online.

..I did some research and they have never been illegal.

..I did some research and they have never been illegal.

I am sure you did some research.

The way I look at it though is if you had been with me in Hawaii advising me on legal matters and I was a trained scuba diver and went to go catch some fish and 3 kama'aina fish stores that 2 of which did their own diving and catching of fish told me it was illegal to catch a fish I would listen to them over you.

If we were in court and a judge had two sets of witnesses he would first ask their credentials. On one hand you have a group of people that make a living doing something and have paperwork and credentials to back them up and on the other hand we have somebody (a hobbyist) who may or may not have credentials on legal research who did not go to hawaii to look in their archives who may or may not have spent more than 15 minutes doing research. I would still go with the 3 local fish stores in hawaii that did their own diving.

Regardless though it does not matter as I did not own a hawaiian cleaner wrasse when I was in hawaii. If I ever get an angler though I will send you a PM on their care though Diego since you do have a great deal of experience in that area.

Not in law, but in psychology. For some reason i think she would believe someone who actually knows what he's talking about..LOL

Well I doubt all those people were lying to me. They may not have been endangered buy they were illegal to collect at the time. I believe the 3 local fish stores at the time over one person, nothing personal I just need more than your word to believe you.

Sorry, Thundrkat...I sent an e-mail to the State of Hawai'i Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Aquatic Resources. Here is the response I got:

Brian Jackson,

The Hawaiian cleaner wrasse is not currently regulated. The wrasse has never been regulated specifically. There has been unsuccessful attempts in the past to ban their taking and the department is concerned about the taking of endemics and this species in particular because of its specialized feeding requirements.

Persons collecting the wrasse or any other marine life to sell are required to have a commercial fishing license. Fishing regulations, including restricted fishing areas can be found on the department website at www.state.hi.us/dlnr/dar under regulations. You may also want to check the department's division of boating and ocean recreation for additional area restrictions relating to ocean recreation.

Ah, the people I was talking to were kama'aina and must have been proban. That is what I call good research though! Credible, concise, and not full of sarcasm. He has good people skills (some people need to take notes).

personal opinion, but i would NEVER buy from a store that trusts a convicted felon to run the place, let alone one thats still on parole. after that flatworm outbreak alamo had also, i never recommend them to anyone unless they want their tank to crash.

why, not that long ago, i recall hearing gabe and chris chitchatting about how they 'accidentally' put about 60 gallons of chlorinated water into a clients tank that they were servicing.

mind you, alamo aquatics doesnt offer a cleaning/setup service, but funny enough theyll come out and do it all for you!

guess this is the reason i sued them for defamation of character...

-edit-

not the big chris, the tall skinny one.
