This weekend went down to the cost Port A. I was just messing around and picked up this piece of sea weed I was looking through it and yelled holy **** their was a baby angler in it he is smaller than a dime. He made the journy home in a water bottle and is done acclimating and his having fun in my fuge.

Here is what I found about him,

Species: Histrio histrio (sargassum frogfish)
Size: 3-20cm
The only angler with a swim bladder and can swim great distances.

here is a pic of one havent gotten a pic of mine yet

I also found a pipe fish in the seaweed but he isnt as cool as the angler ;)

When I lived in Brownsville, I had many of these in my tanks over the years and they are great. I've caught them all in Sargasso seaweed that I netted while deep sea fishing off SPI. I fed them small baitfish that I netted in the Laguna Madre. A note of caution, as they grow, they will start to eat other small fish in your tank. I've seen them eat fish that were almost as big as they are.
Sargasso seaweed had all kinds of critters that have evolved to live in the seaweed. There are nudibranches, crabs, pipefish and of course the angler. They have all adapted a coloration and appearance to camoflage themselves.

This is true. Here's a picture of a few critters we shook out of some seaweed we picked up in the surf last year. I let them all go as I didn't have a salt tank for them :(

We caught 3 anglers, 1 pipefish, a couple nudibranches and tons of shrimp and crabs. I'm going to do this type of "fishing" again soon...maybe I'll bring some back this time.

Weird. The seaweed I found on the beach in Port A earlier this year seemed to be totally devoid of life. Maybe I need to look somewhere else...awesome find.

Very cool This is the first time I have ever seen an angler in the seaweed and you cought 3 that is sweet. I saw lots of the nudibraches but didn't bring any home wasnt too sure if they were good or not. Next time I go down there I will diffently be on the look out for more cool stuff in the seaweed.

i had some of those nudi's in my fuge, but then stopped seeing them(not that i ever saw them all that often) i suspect they got thrown out with some pruned macro.

If you net the seaweed offshore, you have a lot better chance of finding a lot of life in it. Once it gets rolled around in the surf much or all of what was living in it drops off.

BTW the angler is still doing good it is amazing how much this little guy swims around comparied to my other one, I think its cause the little guy is the only anler with the swim blader so it makes it easier for him to move around.

Went to Aquatic warehouse Louis got some new ghost shrimp in so we picked out a dozen of the smallest ones for the angler. As soon as they were dropped into the fuge the little angler gobbled one up. :D
