Definately worth it if you can pull it off. It will help a lot with surface skimming...which can be a problem in nanos.

HOWEVER, if you have the money check out the JBJ cubes or other similar 'all in one' nanos. They are much easier to operate and control than homeade nanos. IF you are wanting to keep corals you are going to run into temp. probelms, the lights will super heat the water during the day and at night it will swing dangerously low. With a homeade tank you're going to have to figure out how many fans to add to keep the daytime temp in check and put a heater in to control a swing. By the time that is all done I've seen very few people who can actually look into their nanos through all the equipment...lol

I bought my JBJ 6 gallon from a guy that rips out the JBJ lights and replaces the ballast so it can support the 56w of lights he puts in. He also puts in 2 fans. My point: he knows the 2 fans he has added are enough to keep the daytime temp in check so all I did was slip an undergravel heater in the back compartment with the carbon and bio-balls for the night time swing.

Seriously, do it yourself nanos, are fun but a TON of work to get them 'clean' looking inside and out. I would do a lot of research and make a list and picture exactly how you want it to look before you start buying anything.

Also, since you're a newbie, I dont know if anyone has told you this but nanos are a ton of work to upkeep. The smaller the water volume the less room for error so if something goes wrong it goes wrong FAST. IMHO nano keeping is a whole other science than these big ol' tanks ya'll run. But I love them...they're literally like little bonsai's.

Hope that helps.
