Here's a "chance" Pete and I took about 6+ weeks ago. Ordered it on line.

It is SO close to a SMD and still seems to be coloring up. I'm now about 95% sure it IS THE REAL DEAL!

The true SMD is actually almost an orange red polyp. This is still pretty orange, but getting more "red" to it every day now!

1st pic is about a month ago when I'd had it coloring up already for a few weeks.

2-3 pics are today.

This baby is 4" x 5" square!!!!!!!!!!!

:lol

It's a little bleached out on "top" right now as I've been blasting it with light the last week.

hey todd, maybe you can have Brian go take pictures of yours. I think its one of those cases where a picture doesnt do a coral justice. I sure would like to see some macro shots of your SMD. BTW, man I like your tank a lot.

Actually, it doesn't take an expensive camera! Todd my guess is you are making the same mistakes I used to make. Brian gave me lots of tips and I got some off the internet. Here is my equipment and what made mine work:

- FujiFilm S5000 3.1 meg-pix (Has macro setting & zoom)
- Use in Macro mode & Auto everything (I suck at manual camera settings)
- Add-on 1+2+4 macro lenses
- Tripod
- The tripod is for stability
- Take pics with lens flat against the glass, or as close as possible. Air between the lens and glass causes most of the distortion
- Tripod tilted on two legs (Stability), lens touching glass
- Adjust zoom until camera will focus
- Distance from glass to coral makes a BIG difference
- Sounds weird but if coral is further away from glass and camera won't focus: "Reduce" macro magnification by removing the +1 then +2 lens and zoom more
- Depress button 1/2 way to test focus before each shot
- Take at least 6-8 shots of each piece/angle with different zoom settings
- NEVER use the flash

BTW - Your pictures are not that bad ... compared to MikeBoy's :lol

Yes, they do suck. For some reason that coral is SUPER (no pun intended) hard to photograph. It's "good side" is a long ways from the glass where you have to shoot the pic. Plus the colors glow like crazy and somehow this seems to make it get blurry more easily....yes?

Steve, how much did all that crap cost?

Steve, how much did all that c-word cost?

Correction, the S5000 is a 3.1 MP camera!

I Got the camera used from Alex for about $300. You can get a new S5100 (4MP) off Amazon for $285.
Lenses were $24.95 + Adapter for $15.95
Tripod was about $50

All less than $400 (Batteries not included ;) )

Hey Todd..Brian just got a new camera so you should PM him about getting his old one...lol. I think it has a lot to do with operator malfunction more than camera ability...I love my 2 megapixel. I took the following shots with it...

I despise Brians camera, but the new one he just got seems a lot easier and nicer to use (its a Canon). But I'd still take my Sony any day...lol.

Here is a picture I took today from my Kodak DX7590 5 Megapixel. I had to dust off the tripod but glad I did. Made a BIG difference :) The camera was $499 but that was last spring. Just like anything, newer models have made this one cheap by now.
