How does Echinophyllia "grow" in your tank?

Dumb Question: How will this Echinophyllia "grow" on this piece of rock? I have it sitting in this location in my 2.5 nano.

Will it attach in any way to the rock (I don't think so)? Does the skeleton simply grow horizontally?

Probably a dumb question but I am not sure.
