Hello everyone,

I was hoping you could help me ID these two unkowns in my recently set up tank:

Some kind of Polyps... I didn't notice them when I put the rock in but now they've started opening up:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some kind of webbing. Any idea what could be causing this? Should I be concerned?

Thanks ;)

The polyps look like some kind of protopalythoa(button polyps) and the webbing stuff may just be some kind of sponge. Just use a net or something to scoop it out if you want.

#1 looks kinda looks like aiptasia to me and #2 looks like sponge. If aiptasia, you need to kill it - it will spread like crazy - a lot of the time it will come in on LR. When I see any, I personally shoot with Kalk. Hopefully someone else will either confirm or correct me?? :)

#1 looks closer to aptasia than polyps to me
#2 is probably sponge. I have it in low light areas like under and between rocks.

#1 - polyp of some kind, don't think it is aptasia. Aptasia usually is a solid color thrrough the base and has longer tenticles.
#2 is looks like a sponge of some sort from the picture.

Thanks for the tips!

I did a lot of googling & you're right, it does look like Aiptasia :(

Once I finish adding my live/base rock I'll put in some peppermint shrimp I suppose.

I couldn't find any info on the white "sponge". I take it that it's not a threat to the tank for now so I'll leave it be.

Thanks again!

If you want to make sure its aiptasia try to feed it something. Aiptasias are anemones and will resond to this but polyps are not really known to respond to feeding.

#1 is not Aptasia, looks like a Paly, which will spread fast and sting the heck out of other stuff - I would Kalk it!

#2 I don;t think is a sponge - no structure to it. Something (I have no idea what) builds these type of little "nets" in rock crevices, I don't think they do any harm unless they build over the top of a Zoa or something.

I did read about some invert that built white webs... can't recall if it was a worm or something else.

Perhaps I will go ahead & kalk the aptasia/polyp, thanks.

Here is something else that I've been wondering about... down in the refugium. (very small & hard to get a good shot of)

Any ideas?

Hopefully not some kind of flat worm? From what I've read, some (all?) kinds are bad news...

Thanks again :)

#2 could be die off if it's new rock. Smell it, if it stinks it's dead and should be scrubbed off.

Sorry, I should have clarified.

There are 10's to 100's of these tiny things on the glass & macroalgae in my refugium &, upon watching closely I saw that they're alive & moving.

Both pics are of the same kind of thing & they're mostly red looking from plain eyesight

I thought they moved very slowly until I tried to take those pics under high magnification :)

Yeah, those polyps look kind of like majano. They are so cute when they are young but ugly when they are older (at least mine are).

Yep, that's a flat worm. Don't panic. Its hard to tell from that pic if its the common red flatworm a lot of people have. They don't really cause any problems other then reproducing like crazy sometimes. Here's some info on it.
