Just looking for some input on these two cameras. I am looking for a camera to use for work and my aquarium. Work will be paying for it but has to be reasonable as the budget is not unlimited. Here is a link to the two cameras I am thinking of getting. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons2is/ http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydsch1/
Let me know what you more camera experienced members think.

i used to work for canon so i can give a little insight to this
the canon will beat the sony any day of the week. the IS built into that camera is simply amazing.
not only will the canon blow it out of the water optically but it also will on price in the long run. price a 1 gb memory card for both cameras. sony accessories are expensive and proprietary.
if you have any more questions let me know.

My brother bought a Canon Powershot A75 a few years ago and raved about it, so my parents bought one. They really loved it also and my brother still loved his so I bought one. We have loved ours too. I give it a huge thumbs up. I realize you're talking about a totally different model but just wanted to pass on that all of our experience with Canon has been great.

the a75 is/was one of the best sellers ever in canon's digital lineup. i picked up one for the wife so she wouldnt be banging mine around and she loves it.

I have both a G3 and I bought purejoys Digital Rebel a while back and love them both and the only reason I keep the G3 is my wife can use it easier. I have wanted to sell it and pick up an A75 or 95 that would be smaller and easier to carry around, plus she doesn't need all the extra functions the G3 has.

i miss my dreb :( going to start working on talking the wife into a 20d to replace it :)
check into the sd400 for her. they are great for non-techie wives. i was actually going to get one of those for the wife but i grabbed the a75 for $150 over a year ago and i couldnt pass that up.
the sd400 prices are dropping like flies now too because they are due to be replaced any day now.

I've got the Panasonic FZ-10 which is also in that class and love it. Check out the FZ-20(newer version) or FZ-5(smaller version of FZ-20). If you read the reviews, the panasonic sony and canon are all really close. Each has its strong and weak point, so just compare those, and you'll probably be happy with which ever one you get.

I did just that after I posted the Sony was 120 and the for the canon it was like 95. :wacko
I looked into the panosonic as well but the closest it will get is like 10cm the canon will focus at like 0cm. I don't think I can go wrong with any but like witecap said compare and then pick but I am leaning toward the canon. Thanks again for the replys. I hope that I can get it next week. Might have to drive 60 miles to get it at Bestbuy in Brownsville as the store here in McAllen is out of them.
Thnaks again

you looked in the wrong place. a 1gb card for the canon will run ~ $50 (they can be had on sale for $30)

I'm an real estate appraiser. I take over 10,000 digital photos a year. We recently did a poll of appraiser as to which camera mfg. we use. Over 95%: Canon. Here's why we like them and what to look for:
Buy one with a rechargeable lithium ion battery. The last forever, unlike other rechargeables. I charge mine once a week. That means I get over 200 photos per charge.
You can actually see the LCD in direct sunlight. This is a BIG deal for us, and should be for you. All the other suck.
The are bulletproof. I've dropped mine several times, just some scratches and dents. The metal cases are great. We REALLY abuse our cameras. Seriously abuse them. They look like they've gone thru a war, and they still keep takin'!
Buy cheap. If you go to www.slickdeals.net and are patient, there's usually a great deal that comes up at Dell for them. Right now they have the SD400 - a VERY NICE camera for $262.

best advice i can give you is to learn lighting. it will make or break a photo.
take tons of pics with it too. practice is the best teacher. and the beauty of digital is that there is no cost should you not like the pic.
