Guys, I bought an old sump from a friend and it has some compartments that I dont need and I dont want. It has a place for a built in skimmer and I dont want it. I only want to use it as a fuge. How can I take it apart? Is there any special way to do so? What tools do I need? Please help as I cant wait to setup my tank. Pete? Reefone?

The biggist problem is getting the tools in there to do the job. I just cut the center wall out of mine so I could add some baffels and it was a PITA. Got the baffels is and it doesn't look too bad.

If you can get a jig saw in there, use a metal or acrylic blade and don't push. Other than that......a 1,000,000,000 passes with razor knife. Maybe a small handheld hacksaw.

depending on space....take a hacksaw blade, cut it in half, wrap one end with a TON of duct tape.....

Unless Master Pete or Kind ReefOne can share something different, that's all I can say to do. If they do though.....guess I should have asked the same questions a week ago! LOL

If its a good bond its going to be almost impossible to get out. Your best bet is a tool that will fit in there and cut as close as you can.

Maybe this will give me a reason to buy a dremel too.....LOL

Hmm, so a dremel will do the job? It is a very good bond. I guess I will just start cutting because I think taking it apart is out of the question.

as easy as it is to GUM it up and then the GUM sticks to everything and you CAN"T get it off, I wouldn't try that.

i cut some acrylite with a heavy duty cut off disk on a dremmel. it works great, just don't force it and buy a bunch of them, because they break pretty fast. dremmel even makes an attachment that extends the tip out with a bendable shaft (i think), that may help with the space issue.

yes they do.

Yeah the bendable shaft is the best. Not haveing to hold the bulky dremmel, and only hold like a marker size shaft that you can be more creative with any project.

I have a dynafile at work... Its a nice hand held pneumatic belt sander. Comes in handy soooo many times.

After cutting the acrylic I'll bet it would do a great job sanding it down ;)

There is a possible problem here. If you remove the baffles, you have significantly weakend the structure and it might not hold when full of water. Hard to say without seeing it.
