I am setting up a 10 gallon reef tank (my first one in about 5 years!) and would like some stocking recommendations for reef-safe fish. I realize that in a tank this size I probably can't have more than one or two fish, so I want to be really happy with the one(s) that I get. Keep in mind that I am fairly new at this, so nothing drastically pricey or difficult to keep.

Thanks!!!

Hope this link helps. I wouldnt recommend clownfish though, but everything else seems fine to me..

Im interested in why you wouldnt recommend clowns?

Because clows need a bigger tank to swim. Although they dont venture more than 10 ft. away from their host anemone in the wild, they require room to mature and hopefully mate.

Gobies or Firefish.....and some smaller clowns are good for nanos.

I had a 2.5 gal nano and had just a 1 Fireshrimp, 1 Peperment Shrimp, 1 Emerald Crab, and a couple small snails with some corals...and I loved that tank.

Yes, but most Nanos have a closed lid. They're not as bad as some other jumpers such as some wrasses and hawkfish.

There are a bunch of cool fish that you can get. Check the link that Diego posted, its a good one.

Yes they are, but so are a LOT of other fish. We've got three firefish in our 210G, and besides wandering off into the overflow boxes every now and then, they haven't left the tank. None of our fish have tried to jump in the 210G actually, and we've got a couple of wrasses too. I contribute a large portion of that to the moonlights. Seems that every time we had a jumper in the old 75G, it was always at night. I think fish sometimes just get freaked out in the dark (something touches them like a worm, crab or snail) while they're snoozing. Just a thought...

I think they may also do it while chasing pods at night.

LOL - THAT's the truth!!! MAN - our rabbit fish has gotten huge, and he hunts at night. Every once in awhile, I'll hear this huge splash and then a WHAP against one of the doors on the canopy. He hit it so hard one night, that the canopy door flew open! Scared the you-know-what out of me :o . That fish is an eating machine though...I guess that's partially why he's grown so rapidly.

Gary's right though - most nano's I've seen have a lid, so jumpers shouldn't be an issue. ;)

Brian - awesome pic! That would be a super cool combo for ds1196's nano :D

I really like the clown gobies. Do you think that 3 would be too many in such a small setup?

I think thats a maybe, but dont quote me on that. In my ten gallon nano I only have shrimp. I wanted a green chromis but I wasnt sure if it was too small for it or not. Try the clown gobies, they are nice and very peaceful.

clown gobies sound like a good choice because they are small, not overly active, and develope a ton of personality. when i had one in my 120G mixed reef, that little clown gobie was what most people would comment on, out of a whole tank full of corals and colorful fish.

My friend use a six line in his 10 gallon nano, cool fish real colorful and interactive.
They kind of have a personality. Also they aren't to exspensive to buy nor are they hard to keep.

I dont think a 6line is a good idea. Very active fish and even better jumpers. Even Liveaquaria recommends a 30g or larger. They grow to 3inches.

I know several people that have six lines and are very please with them. There is nothing wrong with active fish only that you get to enjoy them more than boring fish that hide(lol).

Firefish are the worst for jumping out, but personaly never had a six line jump.
They usualy jump if there is a fish bothering it, or even trying to dominate it.
IMO I do not think that you will have any problems if you went this route.

I think I am going to go with 2 green clown gobies and a six line wrasse. I have a pretty tight fitting lid on the tank, so they can jump all they want! Thanks again, everyone.
