I am trying to make a surface skimmer around a drilled 1" bulkhead and I was owndering if I rough up the edges of the acrylic will the silicone be strong enough to hold it all together as well as hold it to the glass.

The surface skimmer will only be 9"L X 4.5" wide. Then siliconed to the tank. Basically siliconing the bottom of the acrylic to the sides and the front then to the tank. If that makes sense does to me. If not I will add pics tonight.

Just go buy the weldon products and use them. For a can of weldon 4 and tube of #16 cost me around $10 at Regal plastics. Use this to put the pieces of acrylic together and then silicone the box onto the aquarium once done.

There's no other plastic supply seller or acrylic seller in the area there. I think you can also order them online from some places. Maybe someone will come in on this that has ordered online. You may want to PM Pete or Dan, they may have bought online before.

Anyone that sells acrylic should also carry Weldon.

Thanks I will check one of my 4-H families sells glass and acrylic but when I asked about weldon it sounded like they didn't have it. Will have to go by and check. Thanks ~Pete~ for the link if I cannot find it locally I will get it online.

Look at the second link pete put out, the 16 has a thicker body to it. I used it to fill in spots when I was doing some playing around where the #4 didn't quite get a water tight seal.

I'll wait for the experts on that one sine I don't deal in acrylic tanks that much. I believe so but it may be a specific type for tanks.

Regal sells a scratch removal kit for $12 and the LFS sells them for $36. Wasnt' sure if chemicals were different or anything so didn't get one yet. The $36 is a fish store though....so very well could be the markup.

I used super glue to make a corner overlow for my old 10gal once. It held together quite well, and the joint was clear with only a few bubbles....

I have a large calfo style overflow in my 120g tank and it was assembled with silicone only as in west tx nobody any kind of acrylic adhesive. I would have had to order it and was too impatient. So far so good as it has held leak free for the last 6 months.
