View Full Version : Mushrooms and one crazy crab

First off I have some Red Mushrooms that used to be beautiful but now seem to be sad (best looking word I could choose). All other shrooms look great and are spreading but these stay shriveled up all of the time. I was told the more light the faster they grow but all the shrooms in lower light have doubled/tripled and these look bad. I can't move the rock they are on so how can/do I move them?
Thanks
The crab managed to climb the PVC to get a scenic look of the tank, talk about a super crab.

Well, I can't really tell where your shrooms and coralin algae start and end in that pic :D

What type of lighting and how close are they to the light? Actualy mushrooms are a lower light species - they do need "good" light, but not "intense" light. Maybe another rock or coral to shade the area a little?

That pic was of my crazy crab I didn't take a pic of the shrooms. Would you like one? Can't they be cut and super glued to a lower rock? It would a mother at best to move the rock and maybe even worse to try and shade it.
Are you saying I have to much coralin algae?

No, No, No, not at all ... I just thought there were some shrooms somewhere in there :wacko The coralin growth looks awesome!

Cutting/gluing shrooms is MUCH easier said than done - something I would not suggest trying! Any chance you could get the rock out and chissel off the section with the shrooms on it?

So, how much light are they under? PCs, MHs, wattage? Could be something other than the lighting!

I didn't take a pic of the shrooms. Would you like one?

I'd like to see a pic :pics :)
IME the only 'shroom like critter that can withstand a decent amount of light are ricordias. All the others will wither and prune up when exposed to too much light. You could try scraping them off the rock at the base of the 'shroom (as close to the rock as you can possibly get), but then you'll have to deal with getting them to reattach to another rock...you can't just glue them directly, you have to either wait for them to attach on their own (I'll generally place one on a small pile of rubble in the 'fuge to let it attach by itself) as they are too slimy and the glue wouldn't hold...plus, I don't think they like having glue placed directly on their flesh. I agree with Steve - if there is any way you could chisel the 'shrooms off the rock they are currently on, this would be by far the easiest method.

W. :)

PS - LOL, Steve! Don't feel bad...I sat there for five minutes squinting at the screen looking for the 'shrooms...LOL :roll :lol

Good to hear about the algae because you are seeing just a tiny portion of it, it has really taken off in the past 45 days. I clean only my front glass every 2-3 days and it is all I can do to keep it off it. I have taken a razor to it 2 times in the past 14 days it grows so fast.
468W total (384W PC's and 84W T-5's)
I could probably chip off the spot they are attached to pretty easily and just glue it to another rock, sounds like a project for this evening. Only reason I assume it is to much light is because the other two areas with shrooms (Bullseye and Ricordea) are freaky happy and healthy.

I posted a pic before I saw your post so there you are, is there anything you aren't helpful with?
I have a 52 Harley in the garage that the speedo just quit working on. Do you know how to fix it :D .

Hum ... PCs and T5s shouldn't be too much for the shrooms? Then again, each species is a little different. If you can chisel off a chunk of the rock with the shrooms, I would then give then a SeaChem Reef dip or Lugols (Iodine dip) treatment - that would help any disease/parasite/infection that might be the cause too. Then don't glue the rock down yet, but experiment a week at a time in different locations to see where they like it best.

Good luck!

The Discosoma shrooms seem to be the only ones that don't like intense light, especially blue/purple ones. My Rhodactis do great in intense light. They are the fuzzy/hairy ones as well as the elephant ears.

It is for sale and will be up on E-bay NLT this Fri, (it is my brothers) he is setting the reserve at $12K but said if I knew anyone local he would take $10K. Sweet bike, needs a little TLC but will start every time with less than 10 kicks.

Thats pretty nice for sure, looks like an 80 inch UL flathead, the emblems on the tank definately indicate '52/'53. 10 grands not bad. The speedo probaly needs a new cable or its come loose from the backside of the speedometer or the sending unit on the transmission. Either way, a fairly simple fix. I have a '52 custom Panhead in my garage, original mill and trans, molded frame, cleaned up & tweeked, stock Linkert carb, some neat little tricks in the motor... Cool ride.

I ck'd the back end of the cable and figure it is the speedo end just haven't pulled it to confirm. Love to see a pic of yours when you get a chance sounds sweet.

Ahh well, JimD pretty much covered my initial guesses on the speedo problem...LOL :lol
Oh, and yes, Clif...heheh...actually I DO know quite a bit about cars and cycles - I'm not quite as proficient in mechanics as a tech, but I know quite a bit...started out as being my dad's "go-fer" when he worked on the family vehicles, I'm married to a mechanic, AND working as an automotive service advisor for about 5-6 years. I'm a huge fan of muscle cars and have owned two Harleys myself. Still have my MC licence, but no bike :cry

BTW - that '52 is SWEET :skeezy
Soooo - how's the kickback on starting that beauty?

That bike has a manual distributor advance/retard mechanism using the left handgrip, if started in the full retard position, no "kickback" at all... :)

Exactly what he said, zero kickback.
