OK, I bought two of these a couple of months ago - before I found this place... I like to keep an extra power head or 2 around. I had a bucket of RO/DI water to replace the evaporation water (I put a PC cpu fan in the back to keep the water cool - works GREAT, by the way!). I put the pump into to keep it circulating yesterday. Look what happened overnight! Sure glad it wasn't in the tank!
BTW, I called Rio, and was promised someone would call me back. Ribbit, ribbit, chirp, chirp...

Yeah I have always stayed away from them for that reason...exept the Seio's, they do not have oil in them. I have two 1500's in my tank, all is well so far

It's a 600. I think I have 2 or 3 other Rios. Is the pump that comes on a bakpak a rio?

Yes, the backpak is standard with the rio.
I thought they had done away with using oil in all of there pumps. Maybe that was an old model still out there, that sux.

My mistake - no oil...
I just received a call from the folks at Rio. They had me take the back off of the pump and give them the batch number.
He asked me to send them back the pump for analysis, which I agreed to do. I told him I wasn't really that concerned about the cost of the pump, as much as I was that I had a handful of other Rios...
He assured me that that have intentionally fried many, many pumps in testing, in reef tanks. He said it has taken them years of testing and refinement, and that current Rio pumps will NOT adversely affect a reef system. He says that unless the pH is less than 6.7 or so, all will be well. Something about the copper in the coils...
In any case, he has assured me that I shouldn't yet panic...
