I have a 20 gallon plastic (food grade) barrel that I plan on using for an auto topoff but it was used to hold soda syrup in its former life. I’ve soaked it with bleach water and left is filled with water for days but it still smells of Dr. Pepper

What’s the best way to clean this for use as water storage?

P.S. I also have plans to buy 2 more 55 gallon barrels for water storage. They will more than likely be from Coke or previously filled with tomatoes or some other food stuff. I only mention this in case there are different methods for different situations

Did you let it soak in bleach, or just washed it out with bleach?

Chances are that the syrup soaked into the plastic and may take a while to migrate out and react with the bleach. In either case I wouldn't worry about it. The small amount of residue shouldn't be harmful to your tank.

The sugar should have already washed out. What's left is the flavoring and stuff like that. Your nose can detect it at very low levels.

I did let it soak about 48 hours but the bleach probably evaporated before then... I wont worry about it then.

thanks for the advice, now I need to score 2 55 gallon barrels

I think there is always someone along Roosevelt/281south selling them. Last time I drove out 281 north to CB Pets, there was a guy parked at one of the firework stands selling barrels too.
