View Full Version : Bio-Diversity Contest!

Ok, I have decided what's next in the MAASTard contest series! To enter, you need to post a picture to this thread, the winner will get something - no, I don't know what yet ... jeez, a frag or something ... but definately not a Thong http://e4u.deltait.com.au/sport/sport29.gif!
NOTICE: I need some expert help from a few judges, maybe Todd, Tim, JimD, GaryP??? PM me if you can help ... read on.
The basic contest is who can post a picture with the greatest abundance of bio-diversity in a saltwater tank within a 1 square foot area (or less, darn Nano-ites :roll).
That means, you need to tape a 12" ruler (or something for scale) onto the glass and take a picture - get too far away and the judges won't be able to tell what everything is - so frame it up nicely :D
The contest will end somtime prior to the September meeting with enough time for the judges to work through the entries. Hopefully, they can provide a list of items identified, but I don't even have judges yet, so I may be going out on a limb on this one :roll
So, you should have plenty of time to get your entry picture taken & posted.
The abundance of life can be anything, not just corals - heck a school of 400 diferent Tangs in one square foot would be neat to see! Note: they all need to be alive - a pile of 400 dead Tangs will get you banned from the site!
So ... ready, set, pictures please :pics
Hmm, just got to thinking ... a picture of Tim Marvin's frag tank would be kinda like cheating :unsure Let's say it needs to be a "Show Tank"
Oh yea, I can change the rules anytime I like ... It's my frag ;)

so if my tank is less than 1 square foot, I cant enter?

If this was a "Bad" contest idea .. let me know, my skin is really thick :P

No, good idea, just going to be rough getting everything in. What I think would be cool if someone could get a shot with a "gazillion" pods in a small area. Then let you and your panel of expert identify all those little buggers for us :pics. 1 sq ft is a pretty good size though for that. So if you have a rock that is hypotheticly (.sp) 1 ft sq (1'x1'x1') and covered in zoos that would be a good start?

I've been trying to find the best sq foot in my tank. I too was trying to look for all my pods. Pics to follow shortly.

Ok folks :angry This was intended to be a "Fun" but also "Educational" contest ... is anyone out there besides Henry at least "Thinking" about entering?
Let's hear from you before I get a moderator to dump this puppy! ;)

I'll snap some shots this evening. I think everything I have in my 110g is organized in a small sq. foot of space. :p
I think the idea should be different species - pods... um, I dont think qualify. If that was the case I'd bust out my microscopic camera...... Hehe.

LOL...I would've WON that contest, except after the Interceptor treatment most of them croaked >_<
No wait - Dan's 'fuges have the most 'pods I've EVER seen! 8)
So Steve - can I move all my frags to a 12" area of the tank and snap a pic? :lol

Sounds like a lot of work for that brown Acro frag I'm gonna give away - DOH :w00t I didn't mean to give away the prize >_< Really, it is going to be a "Very Rare SPS Frag" that nobody but me has ;)

Since nobody's joined in yet, here's my submission. It's of my 120 that I just added water and salt to. The life (I'm sure they're dead by now) on the bottom is the bugs attracted by the light. There is about 6 very small gnats or some other unidentified flying nuisance.

Well .. so far I would say you are the winner :D Thanks for the submittal :roll

Here is my entry. Some of my tangs wouldn't coorperate, but the other three would have nothing to do with it. Anti-social tangs!!!!
Henry
Thu, 11th Aug 2005, 12:19 PM
There are six tangs in that pic, the sailfin is barely visible behind the large yellow tang.

I'd have to vote manny for the photoshop work, and justin or jade for a real picture. Anyone else? I'm tempted to set up a 10 gallon and fill it with stuff just for a picture and then put it back in the tank. Or how about my Gigas in a 20 gallon touching all four sides....LOL...

The contest will end somtime prior to the September meeting with enough time for the judges to work through the entries.
plenty of time... BTW my tank is set up for depth so many things are obscured... I'd be happy to list the things in the pic if that will help
JimD
Mon, 15th Aug 2005, 05:20 PM
Nah, no need to list. What would be nice though is a full screen close-up jpeg from the rest of the entries, makes it much easier to see the individual species. I must say, the diversity in these systems is outstanding... More please...

so now is this a quantity or a diversity thing we are shooting for?
NaCl_H2O
Thu, 1st Sep 2005, 08:43 PM
My contest, so I say Diversity, regardless of quantity! Meaning the largest quantity of different things! 40 Yellow tangs, would be one "thing", 40 different tangs ... would be cool 8)
Ok folks, the Sept. meeting date has been set for 9/18, so the end date of this contest has been set for midnite on Monday 9/12.
So ... get those pictures posted so our "official" judges can make the call!

We have a Wiener :D
After endless hours of reviewing a huge volume of photographs each containing a multitude of beautiful specimens, our honarable judges came to a conclusion ... they really needed to put down the magazines and pick a winner for this contest :unsure
By a unanimous decision, The Winner Is JUSTIN11! :D
In Justin's entry the judges counted at least 24 individual seperate species :o
Honarable mention goes to: Scuba_Steveo, Jaded, and Hammondegge
So Justin, I'm thinking a nice Millepora frag - does that work for you? Are you in SA or Austin, and are you going to the Blanco meeting this weekend?
Thanks to all the MAASTards that took time to enter this contest, and a big thank you to our wise old Judges: JimD & TexasTodd - thanks guys!
Here is Justin's Nano again for all to enjoy :D
