I can say one thing ... this thread would have 20+ pages by now if Jim was here ;) and there should be no reason why not now!
It may not be a personal tank, but remember;
Our Purpose:
1. Encourage the growth of the marine aquarium hobby in South Texas;
2. Educate and inform members and the public about care, keeping and propagation of marine invertebrates and fish;
3. Prevent abuse to marine animals in general, and to conserve the marine environment by promoting intelligent, planned reef management systems;
4. Promote higher standards of health and care provided by local commercial outlets;
5. Organize workshops, seminars and discussions related to all aspects of the hobby;
6. Raise and generate funds and create financial resources to meet these goals; and
7. Coordinate with and support similar societies devoted to like-minded interests.
What am I missing? I am envious as I always want to feed and touch when I visit the aquariums. The job doesnt pay, so I can wish ...

Hey Jim, I do have a few questions that I was thinking about!
The article said they clean the tank, etc. periodically. Does any algae grow, or do those monster skimmers pull everything including salt out of the water :o
How do you clean the inside of an acrylic cylinder :unsure
How does the substrate stay so nice and clean - is it replaced periodically?
What's your nickname for the turtle :D
I keep going back and looking at it - do you need an apprentice?

I do have a few questions for you if you dont mind.
1. can you explain how a sand filter works?
2. With all of that lighting...why not some live rock and mabe some easy corals?
3. what are the nitrate level
thanks Jim...awesome tank.

Great tank! It must be fun "playing" with those big toys!
More pics! Can we see some closer shots of the equipment?
Do you have to wear scuba gear to clean those skimmers out too :lol

How is that you were able to obtain the position to maintain the tank? I mean they just don't let anybody walk in and take care of a 14000 gallon aquarium.

Nevermind, now that I read it more thoroughly I see you are a volunteer.

The South Carolina Aquarium has 70 paid employees and over THREE hundred volunteers!!! To be a volunteer you have to first go thru a seminar. After the seminar there are several areas that one can volunteer for. Each area has a manager. The manager then has their choice of any volunteers that they thing can help.
What helped me to move to the head of the class was my involvement with MAASST!!!!!
My own personal tanks.
And SeaWorld of San Antonio (I have some great new pictures they sent me of the HUGE gigas clam I donated to them!)
All of the fish and seaturtle in this tank are from the South Carolina sea. The tank is hand cleaned weekly by scrubbing everthing!
The other day I had to hand feed the nurse shark and eels
:unsure
I also had to take the seaturle outside on the second story patio and watch (play) with it for and hour. I did this right after a 15 minute formalin dip on his shell. He has a fungus growing that we are treating. The sun's vu rays are helping to clear the fungus---so the vet states????
