View Full Version : DO NOT SELL TO MEMBER "CAZ"!

TexasTodd
Wed, 27th Jul 2005, 07:52 AM
I hate to post a message like this. But our members need to know.

In June member CAZ contacted me about a Mag Drive 9.5 I had for sale. It was listed at $50 as it was in perfect shape. He asked if I could go lower and I told him $45.

He said he'd take it. I held if for over a week when he messaged that he could get them new on E-bay for that price. I conveyed that I wasn't really happy with his message since I had marked it sold and held it now for a week on his behalf, but told him to do what he wanted.

He said he'd still take it.

Then he needed it desparately before I left town one week in June so I left it at the guard shack for our neighborhood and he would pay me as soon as I got back.

He picked the pump up and has never returned a single e-mail. I even saw that he was on line at MAAST in early June while I was on and still didn't reply. He even has my PayPal address for an easy payment.

It's not the $45, it's the principal. He has stolen from another MAAST member.

If anyone knows his full name and phone number I would very much appreciate having it PM'd to me.

Thank you,

Todd Endersby

That is sad Todd, it's people like this that break the trust and friendliness between reefers. You did him a favor and in return he stole from you.

Good luck, hope you get your money back.

Thanks guys. Ya, I check Joshua. As mentioned I even pm's him while I saw that he was currently on line and told him I knew he was on line.................that's when he stopped coming to maast.

If it takes $45 to get someone like this off maast, then it's worth it!

My PM from CAZ.

[EDIT]PM removed[EDIT]

And My response.

Listen "Pal". I did give you a paypal address. Twice.

"Nerdy little post" Nice.

I pm'd you for a month. I did not have your phone number or actual e-mail.

Call it any way you want. The way I was raised you contact someone to get payment done if you have their item and haven't paid.

And, it's $45. Not $40.

I don't buy any of your excuses I think they are BS. You had at least 6 pm's from me and I can have the web site manager pull them all if you like. AND YOU HAVE BEEN ON MAAST DURING THIS TIME. THE MAAST WEB FILE CONFIRMED IT.

If you paypal today I will post in the forum that you are paid up.

People in this club are honest. You should have been thinking about contacting me to pay. I think you need to grow up some.

I left you my phone number and my paypal.

cendersby@earthlink.net is PayPal

Todd

CAZ, if you like we can have Chris our website manager pull all the times you logged on since June 27th and all the PM's I sent.

Let us know if you'd like that posted here too.

It's funny how you responed. If it had been reversed I would have been appologizing for about 3 pages. You instead decide to attack me and call me names.

Have a good life.

TexasTodd
Fri, 29th Jul 2005, 11:23 AM
Everyone has their opinions Jim.

When someone post a lie on a thread and tries to sound nice, then is not nice, with lies on pm's; the record needs to be set straight.

My take is if you wouldn't say it in a post, then you shouldn't say it in a pm.

Advising other memebers about someone not paying, could be a good thing. But, posting private messages should not be done. PM's = Private Messages. And they should remain "Private".
Problems like this, should not be resolved to throwing "Barbs at one another on the general boards!!!! We all adults on this board, and problems like this should be resolved like adults.
My 2 cents.

CD
Fri, 29th Jul 2005, 12:49 PM
I wouldn't have posted the exact PM myself, as I know how this feels - it's supposed to be private, and our BOD has asked us not to do this - I understand that Todd is just trying to establish the truth in what went down, and how different the attitude was between what was posted here and what went down in private (Todd - it would have been better just to say he sent you an extremely rude PM...it would've still gotten the point across). Caz had Todd's ph. number and PayPal addy - I don't care HOW busy one gets, they can at least have the decency to call a person and let them know what's going on rather than eluding that person for over a month. How long does it take to make a 'phone call? He KNEW Todd was trying to contact him - that's just flat out RUDE. We are supposed to be able to trust our fellow MAASTards, and if one is untrustworthy, I for one want to know. The actual amount of money is not the issue here (it very easily could have been a LOT more), it is the principal. JMO

Agreed. My apologies for posting the PM.

I was fairly angry with the way it was painted on the thread from the other end.

Good way to put it Wendy.

I don't want our MAAST members to get caught as many of us send things over before payment. Heck many of us trust the others in our houses when we are not home!

I'll update this when the PayPal comes in.

Todd

Looks like Todd just posted his part? I don't see a problem with posting your own words if you want. At any rate this should have been addressed by the purchaser a lot sooner. I always make payment at the time of purchase or before. It is not "effing cool" to delay payment for non life essential items. If you don't have the money, don't take the item. That is all I have to say about that. Plus IF I owed someone money I would darn sure be trying to get ahold of them. You could post here something to the effect of " I owe TexasTodd money, but cannot get ahold of him. I am desperately trying to clear my indebtedness so if anyone has his phone number, address, e-mail, or any way to contact him please let me know!" This would have cleared the problem. A month is a long time to let this ride; as far as I know TesasTodd is not a finance company.

Feedback forums can be helpful, but if you look at ebay, there are people with high ratings yet have some very nasty complaints against them. While the majority of dealings may be good, it always sucks to be the minority that got screwed over or had a bad experience.

There would have to be some strict rules in place for such a forum here to prevent things from getting out of hand when there are negative things said. People would need to show some self restraint and stick to the facts in the situation instead of letting their emotions dictate what they say here. Once both sides of an issue are expressed fairly, the issue would either need to be resolved or the thread locked and dealt with privately. The issue of posting PMs also has to be dealt with. While I am against general posting of them, if it show's blatant wrong doing or ill will from someone, then it can help as evidence to argue your case. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Hope things work out between Todd and Caz, exchange money as promised and then be done with it, move on.

Depending on the type of transaction, I pretty much rely on anyone unless it is something that is super expensive. Its my fault for trusting people too much and because of that I have gotten burned. I still think you did the right thing Todd, you were being helpful to the guy. THat is what ticks me off, that you were giving him a hand and he took advantage of you. It is like a slap in the face. I also agree with Brett Wilson here, I dont think the BOD is responsible for this. THeir job is to make the organization better, not to babysit. We are all adults here. I say that if the BOD takes action they will just probably do away with this priviledge, and we dont want that because we all benefit much from it.

If it were me, I would call his employer and alert them to the facts. He may be stealing from them as well. I would then ask his employer about garnishing his wages for the $45. People tend to fess up when they have more at stake than just $45.

Wow. Just wow. This is an extraordinary leap in logic.

I've been following this thread with mild interest. I thought pretty hard about how I felt about visiting them on the job - at first I was pretty hardcore against it, but after some thought I feel that for TT, visiting Caz at work in a professional fashion to attempt to extract payment would be reasonable. However, the recommendations of some members to call Caz at home and at work borders on harassment. The arguements to have the BOD involved seem specious as well; in my limited comprehension, the BOD of a reef club would be responsible for, well, the day-to-day, week-to-week operation of the club, not to police private transactions between it's members.

Now I'm not exactly local to your club, so my perceptions may be different, but it would seem that the purpose of Todd's post was to alert members to the situation and serve as a reminder to protect yourself when conducting transactions with strangers. While I understand the urge to protect the local reefing community, turning a private issue into a witchhunt seems to be taking this all a little too seriously. I try to get some pleasure out of this hobby and leave the grief at work.

Just my opinion. I'll go back to DFWMAS now. ;)

Well, to make it really easy. You have his name, phone number, workplace. Just call the SAPD and report theft. You apparently have the email/PM trails that should help with evidence in the case.

Just my thoughts but just treat it as a criminal case of theft.

CAZ can make all the excuses in the world but he had the item so IMO it was more CAZ's responsibiltiy to make contact about payment not to sit around and say that he had his e-mail and such.....if you have something of someones and you know you haven't paid for it, you need to be contacting the person you owe the money to as much.

Shame shame.......no excuse in my book. Shoot, I get upset (never show it though) when people say they are coming to buy something at a certain time and then don't show without any communication. I know it is part of selling things, but that drives me nuts! Like I had nothing better to do then to sit around waiting on a no show............I could only image how I would feel if someone took something of mine and didn't pay for it.

I'm not trying to push any buttons here - just playing devil's advocate - but what are you going to do? Strong arm him? Beat him up? Is that $45 or your e-pride worth having a criminal record? Because if you came to beat me down for some money, regardless of why or how it's owed, I'm happy to call the law and you would be on the wrong side. Sure, what he did is lame and it was completely his responsibility to pay the debt, but most rationale people I know would simply chalk this up to a lesson learned and not go in the lotto for an assault charge.

While I can't say that the SA police will or won't get involved, you may mention to Caz that you're going to contact them re: fraud or whatever if you don't hear from him ASAP. If you've warned him then he's fair game.

Nathan this thread is more humor than real threats...LOL... In the reef community, you make out much better with friends....LOL....I guess CAZ will be getting everything from the stores from now on.. Bummer, there are some really cool trades being done.

Thanks Nathan..I finally found the perfect match for my concept " keyboard bravery"..and thats the word you said...e-pride!!!!!..Thanks! :) :) :) ..Im a psychology student and love to people watch. I like how people can act all tough online but once its time to square up offline they end up apologizing..I guess e-pride in a way is like keyboard bravery, if not the same. Like your concept..

Well I must admit my concept is derivative from ideas that are kicked around on the Something Awful forums (www.somethingawful.com), where it's actually referred to as e-peni$, but I figured that my not be family-friendly ;) Keyboard bravery is a pretty catchy phrase, don't retire it just yet :)

If you like to people watch you would like SA. You pay to be a registered member ($10) but it's worth it's weight in comedy gold. That site is like rubbernecking at the train wreck that is humanity. Good stuff.

I sure felt like breaking a foot off in the last guy that scre\/\/ed me over. I didn't do anything more than verbally let him know exactly what I thought of him and his idea of fairness but that was mainly because he was only about 5'6" and didn't seem willing to go toe to toe (e-pride perhaps?).

I would have been wrong to get violent, but I wasn't thinking about that at the time. As wrong as it is to say... in hindsight I'm not completely sure that I wouldn't have been willing to risk a brush with the law for a couple of bruised knuckles.

Todd, you should just turn the other check, that would be the mature thing to do. In fact, you should take it even a step further and send him a really nice acropora frag ... with just a few red mites on it :lol

not sure if i am a 100% right but he did confese to taking the pump from you with promises of paying and still hasnt. well is you call the police and show them this printed thread they might go after him and give him the fine for petty theft which is like 50$ or 100$ i mean heck he did admit to taking it.

The part that I'm having a hard time with is he came on here and defended himself. If he was on here, say that texastodd was upset and couldn't get a hold of him, and then spent the time to defend himself.......shouldn't he had made contact right then and made arrangements to pay?????

Sounds like he has no thoughts of paying. Don't worry TexasTodd......karma will catch up with him!

Personally if you know where he works, I would show up and ask for the money in person and see what he does. Not strong arming him or going to fight, but just show up and put him on the spot. Then he can't say you didnt' contact him, etc......and if he doesn't pay then I would chalk that one to a $45 lesson learned.

Sorry....but if I don't know ya (even fellow MAAST members); I'm not going to give you something without payment in hand no matter what your situation. If you couldn't work out the exchange of money at the same time as the goods because of schedules and such; you should have told him to get it off ebay or at the LFS then. Sorry.....not ragging on you TexasTodd; but at least it was only $45 instead of $145 or more. It's stuff like this that makes me so no trusting in the first place.

CAZ........If you read this....you need to show some maturity, applogize to TexasTodd even if you don't think you did anything wrong, and do everything you can to pay the man and now!

Just my 2 cents......

I have been following this thread and curious to see where it will lead. Hopefully CAZ pays up and it goes away. I truelly believe this is unacceptable at whatever level you see it at but I have to say something here. So many people have commented on what has happened here that I know more about CAZ not paying $45 then the money that was lost belonging to MAAST?

Business is business and giving something before being paid (out of good faith) is bad business. I have gotten upset when people have attempted to low ball the items you are selling. Its a tactic and I understand but the people that do this are well aware of the items actual cost and give you that "I have no money know syndrome".

My point being: If you dont have the money to play find something else to do. We all sacrifice alot of things to be in this hobby but the beauty of this vice is that theree are many levels ($$) hence tank sizes and equip.

Very well said Louis. It's sad to see people offering 1/5 of what something costs originally or even less. It's like a house, if you can hardly afford to buy it you probably can't afford the upkeep.

The people I have dealt with in MAAST have all been responsible and respectfull. Texastodd has truely accomplished his goal of making people aware of what has happened with CAZ. It is not MAAST responsibility to police bad transactions but I really dont think any MAAST member will ever deal with CAZ without this subject coming up.
I could see it now, CAZ posting if he can put tangs in a 5 gallon and having not the tang police but the MAAST police asking again to pay up.
Its sad to burn yourself for $45.

Lets move on! Anyone have frags for $1???

True, but how do we know he hasn't already re-registered to MAAST under a different name? Anybody know what his real name is? <_<

Man, publicly posting PM's is NOT effing cool!!!

Actually, much like a thread I saw concerning Jason at Fishy Business, I think it is highly informative to see how people you could be doing business with in the future handle their affairs. Kinda like being the second or third guy in line at the customer service desk.

LOL Bathtub worked ok untill the soap and shampoo started to distort the water quality.

I got a 24g Aquapod w/ HQI light upgrade. Downgraded to something small and easy for the time being. Just kept the 'nice' corals and a pair of gold stripe maroon clowns. But I just moved into a HUGE house that would make a 240 look small :blink so who knows what I will switch to next :angel

To further contort the "problem" of posting PM's, now that it's WAY down the line.......

Not that it makes it right, but I did get an "O.K." from our old Presdent BEFORE starting this thread and posting the PM.

Done here....everyone go watch the wet stuff falling from the sky!

So, i sat here and read this entire post... And i only have one question.

What ever happened to the idea of the buyer/seller feedback forum? I know i have had some great transactions with a few MAASTARDS over the past couple of years. And i like to announce when i had a good experience. I think it is an excellent idea.

Just my input... :)

LoneStar

I like the idea. Would bring confidence to a prospective buyer that the equipment is legit. And vise versa.

And you know what will happen to bad users, they end up chopped up in their aquarium, buried, and LONG GONE. :ph34r Caz? Caz who? LOL

I have a theory, Texas Todd and Caz are really the same person. From what ive seen on MAAST no one has been such a "loooooser" as TT put it about HIMSELF!!! Really though, in a year ill be a cop...let me know if he hasnt paid by then :skeezy
