Hey everybody, I need help. Since the tank is about 6 months old We would like an easy and hardy coral for our tank.:D We have 3 tangs, two clowns, lawnmower blenny, sand sifting goby(can't say that fast 3 times) yellow tail damsel, few crabs, snails etc. :D Two 250w bulbs. All in a 100g tank. What would be a good hardy coral to buy. Something pretty and hard to destroy. Any ideas? I was thinking shrooms, brain, anything.Yes NACLH2O I got the books and am still reading them. :blink
Thanks

Yeah zoos, mushrooms, and riccordia are easy to care for, colorful, and really fun to watch. Mushrooms are my favorite of the three, followed by riccordia, then zoos. You don't need to spot feed mushrooms and they will spread easily in your tanks too. If you do spot feed them they will grow faster but so far none of my corals will eat spot fed foods (tried shrimp, clams, squid, and fish so far).

Brains are great and hardy but they don't like the toxins released from softies.

any of the softies really for the most part.
Had to come back and edit this post...
NOT all the softies, but a good chunk of them. If you went with common ones like zoos, mushrooms, xenia, leathers, etc....

If your looking for a good starter sps you could try a pavona. They're pretty tough, just keep them out of really strong current or they'll develop very long sweeper tentacles.

Ok, first coral, hum ..........
I think you should buy This One (http://www.reefermadness.us/RMD_Acan_lord_dumb.htm) Granted, your tank may not be ready for it, but I could keep it for you for a few (years) :skeezy
The zoas, shrooms, and ricordia are good suggestions, but go to a LFS and get some small frags of these for $10-$15 ea - they grow up fast!
Ok, here is a real suggestion! Hold off on SPS until you have some success with softies and LPS. One of my favorite LPSs is the Fox Coral (Nemanzophyllia turbida), here is a not so good picture on Marine Depot Live (http://www.marinedepotlive.com/fox-coral---nemanzophyllia-turbida-corals--large-polyp-stony.html), and below is a picture of my Fox

My vote is for a frogspawn. Fast growing, tolerant, and hardy.
My other suggestions would be to get several small frags of hardy corals and give several things a try. Richard's suggestion of a pavona is a good one. Another fairly hardy coral would be either a montipora cap or montipora digitata.

The only leather you probably shouldnt get is a Sinularia sp.

I love those Fox corals and they're "supposed" to be easy but I've never had much luck with them. I think almost every one I've ever ordered has come in damaged.
That's an awsome piece...I'm jealous.

Id get whatever..I used to have rics, leathers, frogspawns, torches, mushrooms, bubble corals..they all did good. Although some dont do well under MH's, i never had any loses, till i ditched them all to get SPS :skeezy
