I was talking with Louis at AW and I mentioned that my yellow tang eats alot but is not fat. My atl. blue tang and scribble rabbit are both nice and round. Has anyone ever dealt with internal parasites or a similar problem and how did you resolve it? The fish looks really healthy and does not display any strang behavior.

I do not know about the parasite but those are great pics!!!

Thanks Steve. You can see how skinny he is on the second pic. He is round in the area where the lighter horizontal line is (right below his lateral line) at the center of his body, but is really skinny at his lower body area (from his "chin" to the anal fin).

One of my wholesalers told me that brine shrimp help clear out their system. Hikari also makes a product that is supposed to get rid of internal worms, but I havent used it. Maybe Richard will pipe in, maybe Pazi Pro? I cant remember.

he is approx 5" from the tip of his mouth to tip of his tail fin. i am assuming he is young since he is not so big yet :roll . i have had him for about 6 months. he was the first fish i bought for my tank....but this is my first sw tank, so i didn't really pay attention to see if he used to be fat. i just recently noticed that the other yellow tangs i see in fish stores are really fat compared to mine.

well i will never be able to catch him, so he is going to have to be treated in the tank, or just not at all.

Since Richard is so good with treating sick fish, I'd shoot him a PM or call him and see what he says. I looked up the above info in the Conscientious Marine Aquarist book, but there may be some new remedies for the problem that could work. For now though, I would definitely try to keep an eye on him when he poops and see if you can discern if there are any worms in there....there may not be anything wrong with him. He looks healthy other than being a little slender...he's still young, he eats well, and is probably pretty active too. From what I read, intestinal parasites normally were found in only wild caught fish, and sometimes infected fish that were fed live foods that carried the parasite.

That fish looks pretty good to me.. Mine gets skinny, then fat, then back to skinny. Sometimes he goes weeks as a skinny guy. I'm guessing, but I would think if it had a parasite it would look pale and sick from lack of nutrition...

One other thing, do you have a constant supply of food in there for him? Tangs graze all day.

Wendy - Thanks for the compliment but there's no such thing as being good at treating sick fish. Once they are sick, you win some and you lose some. You know what they say...prevention is the best cure ;)

I had the exact same problem - same fish. She had a big fat belly full of nori all the time. But skinny! She was darkening around the eyes so i got concerned and posted to WetWebMedia (they have helped me three times and have been 100% effective) They said "a gut full of bad bugs" and suggested that i dose her once only with food soaked in metrozol (metronidazole). I took one tablet and dissoved it with some tank water in a small dish, added the daily vitamins and garlic, soaked a piece of Nori in this solution and hung it in the tang. Gobble, gobble gobble and she looked better within 24hrs!!! It took only three days for her to thicken up. I felt like a very good Papa. Good luck.

I'm glad you straightened that out! For a moment I though it was suggested your fish were all sick, so you were good at treating them...LOL...Just Kidding!

do you have sick fish too, seamonkey? I could mail you some, but i would hate to find out that you are selling it at the high school :wacko . It is readily available at LFS in tablet form, one brand name is metrozol. This is a card of 10 capsules. Let me know if you want me to send you some.

selling it at the HS????
school is out :D
no, my tang also has a big fat belly and a sculpted rest of the body,so I am sure mine has the same thing yours did "a gut full of bad bugs"
but as Anson said, if not, what would the pill do to my fish?
I work in south austin, so I can pick it up if you want to
thanks

it was suggested to me to treat preferably once and at most three times, as it is hard on thier livers. i imagine that it would be best to seperate the sick from the healthy if they will all eat the nori. ansonluna, let me know if you want some, i have 9 caps left, you'll only need one. ditto seamonkey. i am in south austin near oltorf and lamar or i can mail.

Hammon - i appreciate it. i may hit you up for it, but like i said before, there is no way i am gonna get the yellow out of the tank. as long as it won't hurt the other fish i will try it.

are they both healthy? My family used to raise boxers and we were aware that wht boxers usually have heath issues. I have always loved them (well I have a soft spot for all boxers), but we never purchased any because of what we heard. Some family friends had one and it was deaf which made it mute as well, but it was a beautiful and one of the friendliest dogs I have ever met.

OH HOW PRECIOUS! Hammondegge, I was going to PM you to ask about your avatar, and if it was a pic of your pooch. I used to have a white boxer when I was growing up. She (Elsie) was the most precious dog in the whole world. I still miss her. Whites are wonderful, aren't they? Of course, now I have another boxer (after having a miniature schnauzer for 15 years). I just love the breed.

Your dog is awsome too mindy. I have never seen a boxer with markings around the eyes....although I my eyes can't decide whether to focus on the rarity of your beautiful animal or that GREEN SHAG CARPET :lol :lol :lol .

How 70's. I think I might change my user name here. LOL. Mindy is my miniature schnauzer's name, may she rest in peace. My name is Mary. I don't blame people for being confused. I know I know. That pic is so 70's. Actually, the carpet was kind of a mustard color, but nonetheless hideous.
