I bought this tang about a week ago, and it was sold to me as a Powder Brown, but the guy told me he thought it may be a Gold Rim.

Go to wet web media.com they have info on your fish and I think your right because of the white patch under the eye this makes it a gold rim tang. Of course I could be wrong, my wife seems to think so?

I've also seen them referred to as White Cheek Tangs. Try that.

So this looks like A. japonicus which is called the White Cheek, and not the A. nigricans which is the Powder Brown... sound right?

Acanthurus nigricans is usually referred to as gold rim tang. Never heard of it called a powder brown, which is what yours (A. japonicus) appears to be. They're both beautiful fish IMO, I'd be happy with either.

If you go by common names, you're bound to be confused at some point, as many people use the same names for different fish. I prefer going by scientific names, usually less confusion.

I would say Powder Brown. JMO
Look at these two pics on this site. They PB has orange in the dorsil fin, and it's tail is more white. The GR has a more colorful tail, no orange on the dorsil fin.

Just my 2 cents! I've been wanting a PB sense I got into Saltwater but never had the tank big enough.

Beautiful Fish!

Your's is A. japonicus aka Powder Brown.

From what I've seen the common name Goldrim Tang is used for both A. japonicus and A. nigricans (aka Whitecheek tang).

john's on the money, its japonicus (white cheek) and that is the more hardy of the two. (the nigricans is the powder brown and is less hardy. see fenner's conscientious marine aquarist for in detail information.)

Man...I'm getting confused myself just reading this thread! LOL :wacko

Some are calling it an A. japonicus while refering to it as a PB and others are calling it an An. Japonicus and calling it a GR whle others are calling is an A. Nigricans and calling it a PB and others are calling it an A. Nigricans and calling it a GR...............then some are throwing White Check in there.

OK....I'll solve it all.

IT'S A PRETTY BROWN FISH! LOL :D

I still say PB!

I stated earlier that it was a powder brown because it looks exactly like mine. I purchased this off a reefer and store owner in NC. He is very knowlegible and even dives and collects some of his own fish. It was sold to me as a powder brown and ...THATS WHAT IT IS :D

Seriously ... can we tell and does it matter ... its a pretty fish!

Agree 1000%, and one of my favorite tangs, along with the achiles.

The PB/WC/GR- whatever died tonight :( It had ich a few days ago, which seemed to be clearing up. This morning it eat like a pig and was swimming like normal, but my wife found it lying on its side breathing very heavy and not moving tonight.

sorry to hear that.that is why i do not mess with those types of fish.powder brown and the powder blue and the hippo tangs.i have heard more stories of people failing at keeping them alive and happy than i have of them surviving.of course the people who do keep them successfully are probably folks who have been at this game alot longer than those of us that have not.at any rate i will be leaving them alone, such a bummer because they are such beautiful fish.
