As no one has answered my question in another thread, I'll start a new one here. I want to build mounts for two filter socks/bags, the ones with the plastic rings at the mouth of the bag instead of the drawstring. I can't find any site that lists the standard diameter of these rings and I don't want to wait a week or two to order some in as I need to get my sump completely done. Anyone have any of these bags and know the diameter of the plastic rings?

Have you tried to contact the vendor or distributor?

Just measured mine. It's 6" ID.

Had to change my sock... ;)

6inches? Wow, that is big. The Berlin Sump hang-on filter sock mounts have like a 4in. wide hole for the sock to fit in.

Chris,

Go check out CB pets. They have the mounts already made with bag filters. The mounts are made of acrylic and hang on the side of the sump.

If you find that the standard size is different than 6", please post it on this thread!! If it is smaller, than I'll want to know for when I ever reorder socks!!

Gary - Sounds like the same ones sold by Marine Depot and a few other places for use with berlin sumps. Those seem to be 4in. diameter rings as the hole in the mounting bracket is like 3.75in. wide. I'll have to try to make a trip up there and check them out.

dpantle - That's awefully big. I have a 6in wide chamber in my sump that I am looking to add these so the ones you have wouldn't work.

I like the plastic rings better than the drawstring ones, much easier to intall/remove without having to tie to the drain lines somehow. The online places also sell some adapter rings, I sent and email to one asking how they work. Hopefully they will respond soon.

That's weird, not sure why anyone would need a filter sock with a 7in. diameter opening when I've never seen a drain pipe more than 2in. wide.

The ones at CB Pets are made by the skimmer company that recently moved to New Braunfels from Houston. Their name escapes me at the moment. Marine something.

Thanks Gary and Pete for the info. The pic on Precision Marines website isn't the greatest, but it looks just like the ones found at other websites. Have to make a trip to CB to check them out.

Ok, made it to CB Pets and checked out the Precision Marine filter socks/mounts. I didn't like the mounts so I'll probably just make my own. My next question is, what material is best for the socks? I noticed the ones CB had are the felt type instead of the nylon mesh. Both are the same price from filterbag.com, just curious which ones work best? I would think the felt would get worn out quickly while the nylon mesh could be washed and reused. Any thoughts?

THANKS! :D

Mine are the felt type, and I run them through the washer, no problem.

Bigger opening=bigger filter/more filter surface area=less often you need to wash it???

My wife was able to get some of that felt material somewhere. Its actually polypropylene, I think. She just made some tube socks out of it by stitching them closed. I put the tubing from the overflow into a sock and pinch it closed with a clothespin. My "hi-tech" sock holder is a little cheaper then the pretty acrylic ones from PM but it works.

late reply to this post but I just ordered some filter bags locally from a filter supply business. I got 50 micron size 1 and 100 micron size 1 to see which ones will work the best for me. They are 16" long with a 7" diameter with a plastic ring on top. There is a size 2 with a 7" diameter opening but they are 30" long. I got them for $1.80 each and got a couple of each to begin with but normal order is min of 25 bags and also they are the polypropylene felt material. I have built a mount using a thin piece of 4" PVC. Anyway they work great and $1.80 is much cheaper than the $5 price from places like Marine Depot. Anyone using these may want to look through the yellow pages for filter supply companies and get them pretty cheap local. Grainger carries them as well but higher priced than others. If you can find them there is also a size #410 that is around 10" in length but not sure about the opening diameter.
