View Full Version : How to move an Anemone??

This is a rose anemone, the thing is, that when we moved it moved from the rock it was at. I did not think much of it because when I got it, it did the same thing. Unfortunately, it stayed on the front glass and all I can see is its foot. I need to move it but its foot is well established on the glass. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have heard you can hold a ziplock with ice cubes next to the foot and it will detach, but I have never tried that.
Should be easy to get loose on the glass. Sliding your thumb along the glass, gently slide your thumb against it (slight pressure) and it will slowly let go. Takes a few minues maybe.

I think you would bve better off leaving it alone. It will eventually move from the glass. Its going to move where it wants to go. I doubt it will stay on the glass permanently.

I have used a platic spatula before ( GENTLY! ) and it worked good and with no damage

I'd leave it also, if it doesn't move in a couple weeks use the credit card trick to scrape it off gently.

Thank you all for your comments. The anemone has stayed in the same position for about two months. I know I should be patient but it should open about twice what it is opening now and visually it is not appealing. I will wait to know your answers after this post. Once again, thank you all!!

I agree on leaving it there. If it were getting too close to a "dangerous" area of the tank (powerhead, overflow) then yes...but otherwise, let it be. RBTAs will find the place that *they* are the happiest with. "Visually appealing" should not be an issue, the comfort of the creature should be tantamount. :)

just a thought but if you shade it from the light, will it not move to where it can get more??? Never tried it but maybe it will work...
The ice thing makes sense, but I think if I did that i would try it on the outside of the glass. (depending on how think the glass)

I have gotten my RBTA to move from the glass once by pushing the glass magnet against it, gently of course. I have also gotten it to move away from a rock I didn't want him at by pointing one of my close loop outputs in it's direction. I would recommend pointing a powerhead at it, that would probably be the safest.

I hate to disagree with my friend wendy, but I think that its important to get both visually appealing and comfort for the animal. There are probably many places that the anemone would be just as happy while keeping the aquarium looking good.
this of course is not a flame... just my 2¢

I use my finger nail because you have the advantage of feeling as the Anemone starts letting go and when he doesn't. One thing about anemone's they go where they want and destroy as they go. I have only one left because of this problem. Good luck and enjoy

LOL...I knew that it wasn't a flame! ;)
The way I look at it (*especially with RBTAs) is that they will travel to whatever place in the tank makes them the happiest. I figure if I'm going to stick these creatures in a glass box, I should at *least* let them go where they are happy - yes, it's nice to have "visually appealing" also, but the way I look at it, that's part of our jobs as reefkeepers...keeping the critters happy. Of course we no longer keep anemones, as I wouldn't have the heart to move one...even if it decided to park itself next to a favorite coral colony. I DO think they are beautiful...in other people's tanks :lol

Use a credit card and slowly lift it from the glass, then move it to a place in the back of the tank that you like. More than likely it will move a little, but IME RBTA don't move around too much.

My rbta is still on the move after more than a month. I'd worry if it wasnt looking as good as it is.

From that picture it appears as tho it is receiving enough light for it to stay put on the glass. We have one of these in a 210 and it moves around a lot.. we probably need to find a more light-ready position for it, but he's too docile and never stays put.
Shade em', and he'll move.. where, I don't really know. :)
