Hello all

I recently wrote to the parent company for Ball Pickling Lime to figure out what is going on with this product. Their email address is as follows: info.us@homecanning.com .

My question was as follows:

Hello

I was interested in purchasing some Ball Pickling LIme but I cannot find it anywhere in the San Antonio, Tx (78201) area. Please tell me how I can get this product either locally or online. I appreciate any information you can give me.

Christopher Bianco

This was their response:

Thank you for your message. Ball(R) Pickling Lime has been discontinued from our product line. We have introduced a new pickle crisping aid called Ball(R) Pickle Crisp. Pickle Crisp is added directly to each jar so that a pre-soak with pickling lime is not needed for crisping pickles. To use recipes that call for pickling lime, simply prepare the pickling liquid and cucumbers according to the recipe instructions, omitting the pre-soak step. Pack pickles and pickling liquid into the jars, leaving 1/4-inch headspace. Add Pickle Crisp directly to each jar following the measurement given on the package:

1-1/2 teaspoon Pickle Crisp per each quart jar and 3/4-teaspoon Pickle Crisp per each pint jar. Process pickles in a boiling-water canner for the time indicated in the original recipe. Or, you can follow the pre-soak step, using Pickle Crisp instead of pickling lime. Combine 1 packet of Pickle Crisp to 1 gallon of water. Soak cucumbers for the same length of time indicated in the original recipe. Complete the remaining steps as instructed in the original recipe.

If you would like to receive a coupon for Ball(R) Pickle Crisp, please reply with your mailing address.

We appreciate you contacting us.

Sincerely,

Consumer Affairs

It looks as if we will not be "pickling" our aquariums with Ball product anymore! I know about Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime but it is only available over the internet (as far as I know). Just thought I would let everyone know whats up, if they didn't already know.

They must not know it is used in the salt water hobby or the cans would be resized and the price jacked up!! ;)

Yeah, I just got my 10 bottles of the Mrs. Wages in the mail yesterday. I ordered it off of the link Polkster gave. All you need to do is switch brands.

Unfortunately, as far as I know there are no Albertsons in San Antonio. They pulled out some time ago.

I am famillar with Mrs. Wages but I have no need to order 10 canisters at a time. The shipping for 1-2 canisters was $10. With the cost of shipping added in I might as well just buy a kalk marketed for the aquarium, lol.

*edit*

Anyone interested in doing a small group buy for the Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime? Let me know, this may be a good option for those of us who do not need a whole master pack of these things, :lol .

pickling lime will be available in SA when the canning season rolls around. I'd have to check my trusty farmers almanac to know when that is but when its available you may to stock up for the year. Of course you can find it easily in smaller communities like seguin and bandera just about anytime

I'll swing by the Super S tonight and check it out.
If anyone happens to go up to Kerville for any reason I had bought a couple of can from the Wal-Mart there last year and as far as I know the Albertsons there still exists and they may have the other brand. Look for it by the canning stuff (jars, lids, wax etc).

I'll post tomorrow on my luck at Super S.

I found about 40 cans. I posted a thread in the group buy section to get a count of how many I'd need to pick up.

I have been using this for over a year. Recently after setting up my 180 I wanted to try ESV (yes more expensive) and I am glad I did. You get what you pay for!!! This dripping kalk thing is definitely worth it and I will pay the extra for the brand name.
