I purchased a medium sized Crocea about a month ago. Since in my tank, the mantle on one end of the clam looks like it's curling up and that side is slimming. It isn't pulling away from its shell and there aren't any visible parasites or fish picking at it. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Please give us more information about your tank - water parameters, lighting, inhabitants, etc. Specifically, what is the clam next to?

tank is 120 gallon, 2 400w 10k lights, sps, lps and variety of softies, tank parameters are fine--ca2+=500. Everything else in the tank looks great including maxima and derasa clams.

Need pics on clams. What fish are in the tank? Have you seen anything nip at it?
How long has the tank been setup, how far is the clam away from the lights?

heres a pic of my clam. Tank is 6 months, water params all in check, running 2x250w mhs, clam is about in the middle of my tank almost directly under the bulbs. My tank is 100 gallons with a 55 sump/fuge running a euro-reef cs8-2. HTH

Move him to the sand bed, The fresh water dip above wouldn't hurt either.

But if he's from the wild or dimmer lights, it's not good to put them right under(close) MH lighting.

That might just work. I usually thought that they need intense light so i put it directly under the bulb. So it being in the sand wont effect it? How do I do a fresh water dip? DO I just match water temps and leave the clam in for a few minutes?

Use RO/DI match temps as good as you can, put him in for 10-15 min. The fresh water won't hurt him.
I start all mine off in the sand. Then move them about 3-4 months after that. Watch the rock boring clams, they can fall in cracks and you'll never get them out.

OK thanks for the help. Does mantle piching affect derasas as well? My derasa has part of his mantle still inside the shell and the part og the shell where it goes in seems to be damaged is that irratating it?

your clam is pinching... a FW dip will cure the issue only for a short time (7 to 10 days). please read the link that jade posted. very good info on what is causing the problem and how to cure it.
i think the placement of your clam is fine. crocea's and maximas are shallow water clams and the lighting is fine.
good luck
