View Full Version : Very Impressed with Fin-Addict

On the way back from the IMAX event a few of us stopped by Fin-Addict and I wasnt completely prepared for how cool that store is!
I'm highly impressed with their setup.
Seeing their frag tank was like suffering from overchoice; with all of the nice frags in there it's hard to decide which to take home. (unless of course you are taking them all!)

Here is one of my favorites that I brought home with me:
No photoshop here except to resize it.

Those are awsome looking. What are you keeping them under? What did you pay for those? (My guess would be $40-$50)

It will be especially nice when they all open up! Rise and shine zoa's!

They are all open now, I took that pic just after lights up this morning.
I am keeping them under T5's; two actinic and two 10K. I'll likely be replacing one of the 10k's soon with a 'blue plus' or something to make it more blue.

Let's just say I didnt pay near that for it. :-p
If you are in SA you really should check out Fin-Addict :)

I like more of a natural look compared to actinic. Don't get me wrong we all need a bit of actinic! When you have zoa's that are colored as nicely as those you should show them naturally (just my 0.02).

Either way those were a great find!!!

I've been to Fin-Addict once. Unfortunately I did not bring my "full" wallet with me. lol. I did get to check out their prop tanks and they had some awsome stuff. The zoa's they have are all (for the most part) colorful with very little green and brown. I wanted to buy a blue and pink (if I remember correctly) ricordea when I was there unfortunately the price they quoted me was beyond my temporary budget. The next trip I take up there will NOT be to window shop!!!

Please define what you are referring to is natural. I don't know of anyone keeping corals under sunlight colored bulbs (5.5K). Most corals are pretty ugly under 5.5K. There is nothing natural about keeping corals in an aquarium unless you house is underwater somewhere in the south pacific. No light bulb can naturally reproduce sunlight. In addition, coral need actinic light to produce the colored pigments theyhave in the wild as a means to protect them from being burned by ultraviolet light. Yes, corals can get "sunburned" like we do. Instead of getting a tan, they get brightly colored.
Actinic (420 nm) is as close as you can get to ultraviolet without being in the harmful range.

I hope that you didn't get offened, I definately meant no offense by my comment. It was just opinion that your zoa's were good looking under the light you have without having to go bluer.

When I say natural I mean... 7500K or 10000K with limited actinic bulbs. Some people go overboard with the blue I feel, NOT that you have (gone overboard).

Again, I am sorry if you took offense to my post, no offense meant.

I'm sure no offense was taken. I was just trying to understand what you meant by natural.

IMO actinics should be used as supplemental lighting, not primary. Some folks running 20K MH bulbs may disagree with me on that though. a 20K is not a true actinic though. On larger tanks we have the luxury of running a combination of bulbs to get good color balance.

Nice corals Brett.
Gee, I wish we had purchased some. ;)

When you swing by to help with the tank, could you bring your camera?

What type of coral is that? I would say a zenia but I am sure that I am wrong for some reason.

Brett

When you say bring it along with you do you mean to Fin-Addict on the 22nd? If so that would be cool so that I could see it in person. I have never seen a neon clove polyp in person.

I plan on going to the meeting on the 22nd but I don't have a car. BUT my girlfriend normally works on sundays so I am sure that she would let me use her car.

I would like to put some faces to the names here on the board. Just keep in mind that I am a tad young and (mostly)uneducated when it comes to reefs... I appreciate any learning experience though!!!

All

I assume that Felipe is one of the owners/workers at Fin-Addict. If so I look forward to the meeting even more now. Well at the very least I still have the opportunity to see a neon green clove polyp in person.

Thanks to everyone.

Its not Xenia, they call them clove polyps..I think i have some behind my rock work..i need to reach in and get them..

GaryP
Mon, 9th May 2005, 08:38 PM
They grow like Xenia. The back wall of my 125 was covered with them when I bought it. I keep them fragged back as much as possible or like Xenia they will grow all over the tank. I don't have the neon variety though. The neon green ones don't seem to grow as prolifically as the regular ones do.

Just a quick question about the neon green clove polyps... Do they hold up well under a lower lighting situation such as my nano cube (72w 50/50)? I'm thinking of getting a frag since I like them so much (either that or a nice frag of colored zoa's, all about the $'s when the time comes, LOL).

Thanks,

Christopher
