Last night we drove over to Fin-Addict and Beth picked out a small algae blenny I maybe 1-1/2" long), which she immediately named Jack :innocent . I, on the other hand, being the concerned aquarist, bought some nassarius snails. Got them home and acclimated, the blenny in the bag, the snails in a tub, well, except one that climbed up and over the side and ended up on the floor (no worse for wear :P ). Anyway, I got everything in and settled and we went to bed. Got up this morning, and Beth goes on blenny safari with a flashlight and he's in about the same place he was in last night.
Ten hours go by...
I get home from work about 6:00 this evening and walk up to the tank and I can see immediately that something's amiss... The coral beauty is swimming back and forth and back and forth and back and forth . . . IN THE CALFO OVERFLOW. :blink :w00t
So I block both drain lines with filter floss, and proceed to try to net him with a six inch wide net in a four inch wide overflow. Anyway, about the third miss, I realize that something else is in the overflow box. You guessed it, Beth's new pet, Jack Blenny. So I change tactics, and help him back over the wall (by the way, did you know that blennies can jump? Yep. he did a half gainer over the side of the overflow and back into the tank. Then I blocked off one end of the overflow with floss, and the other with a smaller net, and "assisted" the coral beauty back into the tank.
The only thing I can think of is that they both managed to scare each other at the same time or something. Regardless, they were in there long enough to completely wipe out some hair algae that was just starting to grow in there :D .
As of lights out tonight, everything is calm and happy and more settled in, and I've got to say that Jack Blenny is quite possibly the most entertaining fish I've ever been around. This guy is just too cool 8) .
