I am QT some fish due to major ich infestation. Going the hypo. route. How long do I keep the fish in the lower salinity?

Nobody has any white dots on them at this point, but want to the the salinity lower to make sure I get it all. Have them at 1.014 and dropping.

I would get it at 1.09 to really make sure all the parasites die. Slowly bring it down by taking a little saltwater out and replacing it with fresh water. I really cant remember the life cycle for ich but there is some life stages where hyposalinity wont work. I would keep like that for a week. You might want to get some more info from GaryP or Tim.

If nobody has any white dots, why would you QT them?

I would QT them because I ENJOY taking all 160 lbs of rock out of the tank to catch fish and then spending hours setting them up exactly the way I like them :wacko

Let me clarify. I had a major ich infestation. I took the fish out of the tank and placed them in a QT tank. They have been in there for about 2 weeks. I have been SLOWLY dropping the salinity for the past week because two of the fish in there are my prized Onyx Clowns. And since this is the first time I have attempted hyposalinity I don't want to kill them. As I have been dropping the salinity the white dots have dissapeared, but I would like to make sure the ich is completely gone so I will continue to drop it to the suggested salinity. :D

You said it..not me..

There is no number of days. You simply leave them there until the ick is gone.

Most people will say 2 weeks at .009

Just because the Ich goes away it doesnt mean that the parasite is gone. Anson, it seems like you are doing everything the way it should be. Like I mentioned before, I would bring it down to 1.09 slowly to make sure you get all the lifestages and eggs that were produced. I believe ich's life cycle is about 21 days. I would probably give it another week.

Make sure its exactly .009 with a refractometer, hydrometers arent near accurate enough. .008 and you can kill fish, .01 and the ich can survive....

I was under the impression that as a thread continued, previously posted (or implied) information would not have to be repeated. So essentially the way a thread works is that replys are exchanged, as readers and posters connect the dots, just as one would in a conversation.
