Raccoon Butterfly

Hello

I'm looking into adding a Raccoon Butterfly but am hearing that it's tough to get them to start eating. A local LFS has one that they've had for 8 days and it has yet to eat anything. Does anybody have a Raccoon that they've been able to get to eat? If so, what are you feeding it and what any tricks are you using. I really like the fish but if I can't get it to eat, it's a moot point. Thanks in advance.

Maybe you should steer away from that one. At least until the LFS is able to get it to eat. When we had our FOWLR tank (135G), we had a RB...never had a problem getting that fish to eat. Actually, it was quite a little pig. :roll

Butterflies can be difficult for a variety of reasons. I would recommend you don't purchase any butterfly that is not eating. IME, Healthy raccoon butterflies usually take to prepared food (mysis, brine, bloodworms) pretty quick and when they don't there is usually some underlying problem (disease, injury due to capture or shipping, etc.).

I agree with the RB at the LFS -- the owner made the comment that he was never very successful at getting one to eat so I thought it might be a trend with that fish -- sounds like I need to keep shopping until I find one that is eating well.

PS: Wendy -- thanks for the welcome - have had the 100gal FOWLR tank for 4 months with a pair of Maroons, 4 green chromis and a bunch of cleaners. Also just put together a 10 gal QT.

Check with Misti (Mathueson). She's the only one I know that is currently keeping a Raccoon. Larry (Instar) is another great resource. He's more into copperbands, but is knowledgeable on all species.
