Wow, didn't know they had come out with the 15k bulbs. I think you should buy some and try them out for us! :)

Their 20k was way less blue than a radium and their 10k is pretty durn white.
i take it you don't like the XM bulbs? my new tank is running 3-400 10k's all XM and 2- 6' VHO blue. what do you think? maybe run all 15k and do away with the VHO?

I love the 10Ks. If you look at the spectrum on their website you will see it has a pretty good blue spike. I was pretty surprised when I looked at it. They don't have the specs on the 15K up yet on their website.

Well, someone needs to try them :)
PAR for the 10k = ~600 and PAR for the 20k = ~242
so I wonder what the PAR for the 15k will be

Try firing off an email to XM and asking them.

I really liked my 14K hamiltons, but after putting in the 10K's (XM) I had on a shelf I will not go back!!! I love the blue and the 20K's were too blue the 14K's were perfect (for me), but the 10K's kick butt!!! Add more actinic and use 10K

I'd like to see these 15K's too.
The XM 20K's were too blue for my tastes; I felt that they made the corals look 'fake' or something. The 10K's too yellow without heavy actinics. My preference in 400W were the 20K radiums.
For a small tank like a 20g or so if I were to go the halide route i'd use the 50K Iwasaki (150W). It looks close to a '15K' bulb.
Isn't it funny how we always leave off the extra K since it really should be 15KK (15,000 Kelvin) ... heh

I know the link says 250 but they are 400.
I was considering trying them out as well.

If I could avoid supplemental actinics, I would have lighting for my fuge without spending any extra money. :D

If you dont supplement then you have lights on lights off! No dusk till dawn deal ... maybe you dont want that, but thought Id mention it.

If it's for a fuge, I don't think you need to supplement. For a display tank with corals, yeah, a good spectrum helps.
Dusk till dawn deal? Thought that's what the light coming through the windows is for! lol

Good point Pete. It's sometimes easy to overlook the obvious.
I will have to stop being cheap and buy more lighting.

It would be cool if one of our local LFS had a couple different bulbs running on their tanks so customers could check out the differences in person. I'm sure they would sell some bulbs as well!

Bryan,
Thank you for your e-mail.
We are in the process of formalizing the data.
You are correct the 15KK is a beautiful lamp and between 10KK and 20KK.

I can hear it now:
Thank you for your question Brian. It's 50% bluer than the 10K and 25% less blue than the 20K.
I would be interested in the par data though.
Heck, I may just buy one and get it over with. :)

Well, ignoring physics and being totally unrealistic and naive about the whole thing
10kk = 600
20kk = 242
600-242 = 358 / 2 = 179 + 242 = 421 for the 15KK

Maybe MAAST should set up a testing facility and when companies come out with something new they canl send samples to be tested and the result can be listed on the web site?

Okay here comes a dumb question? I have a light meter that measures light foot candles (1 candle placed in a square foot) On a sunny day 3,000 ft candles, cloudy 2,000. Gary P's 10k lamps on his 125 - 2,500 ft candles. 96 w pwr quad compact 1,700 ft candles. Is there a PAR meter or is this a formula you use in conjunction with foot candles? If there is please give me the address and I will purchase one.

Hey joshua, I was also following that thread. I consider Bomber to be one of the Gurus in reefkeeping. He was the one who inspired me to go barebottom. I believe I read in his starboard bottom thread that the corals dont get the same light intensity throughout the day. At midday, that is when they get the most intense lighting. It lasts about 2-4 hours. I think that is what he is reffering to.
