View Full Version : MAAST IMAX Event - May 7th

GaryP
Fri, 22nd Apr 2005, 09:02 PM
Hello folks,

We have put together an interesting activity for us to do as a group. Here’s what we have in mind. We have made a group reservation to go see the following IMAX movies at River Center mall in SA: Ocean Wonderland 3D (http://www.imax-sa.com/movie%20ocean%20wonderland.html) and Aliens of the Deep 3D. (http://www.imax-sa.com/movie%20aliens%20of%20the%20deep%203d.html). Please click on the link for more info about these films.

We have this scheduled for Saturday, May 7th. Show times will be 1:25 and 2:25 for the double feature. Cost for both movies will be $11.50 for those 15 and over, and $9.50 for those under the age of 15. This price is for both movies. This is a tremendous discount off the regular individual ticket prices which are $8.95/$7.95 per film. You will also be validated for 2 hours of free parking in the River Center Parking lot.

I made a tentative reservation for 30 people. I need to try to get a better estimate of the head count for the folks at Imax within the next week, so, if you plan on attending please let me know. Also, if you are going to be bringing children under 15, I need to know that as well.

There is one catch to the group pricing. We will need to collect money from everyone before the show(s) and pay as a group, rather than having everyone go get a ticket individually. I will be there at least 30 min. before the movie to collect money and pay Imax. Please try to bring exact change, or as close as possible. If anyone is interested in meeting as a group for lunch on the RiverWalk, or nearby, before the movie we would entertain suggestions for a good spot to do so downtown. We should all be able to fit into Schilo’s without to much trouble and it’s not far from the theater and won’t be to busy on a Saturday.

OK, please give us your feedback. Thanks!

Yeah they give you goggles 'that have been disinfected' to wear. They are a lot more advanced that the red and blue paper glasses...those never worked for me but the goggles are pretty neat.

Anybody have any suggestions where to meet for lunch? I threw out Schilos because I thought we could get an area to ourselves and it is relatively inexpensive by River Walk standards, but I am open. Besides its an old SA landmark.

If you guys like Mexican food, Casa Rio is a family favorite. I don't believe it's very expensive. What is Schilos? It might be a good idea to also figure out who plans to come to lunch so we can call whichever restaurant is decided on to make a reservation (or at least try to!) :)

Jenn
Mon, 25th Apr 2005, 12:58 PM
Gary, we won't be able to make this one. :(
I can't get a sitter on Saturdays and I don't think the 6 month old will leave her glasses on so she won't get too much out of it. I clicked it on the poll.

I was trying to stay off the river if possible. Getting a large number of people into and out of one of the restaurants on the river at lunch time on a Sat. is next to impossible. I speak from having worked on the river for a couple of years. I suppose everyone can go do their own thing if they want and we just meet at the theater.

Schilos is an old historical restaurant on Commerce street, almost on top of Casa Rio. Its basically a deli style restaurant. They also serve beer and wine. Its not really a tourist type place. Its mainly frequented by the folks that live and work downtown. I thought that if anyone wanted to hit the river, we could do that after the movie. We can always go check out the released tropicals. :)

Don't know any info on it, but there is a "La Fonda" I think on Main..McCullough or something like that (LOL) just north of downtown that has a large back patio???? Maybe could even set up reservations for a group? Just a thought...

Hopefully, it is not too late to add my wife and I. The two of us would like to join the party.

We also have room for two more (carpool) in My New Ride (http://www.maast.org/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=11358). Let me know if anyone in the NW Austin needs a ride. We will be leaving from Lago Vista, so anyone in that area is welcome to join us. LMK.

Well Gary,

If the Poll is accurate and everyone does show up, I count 70 people not including a couple of undecideds. That would be way too big a group for one restaurant. We would definitely need to split up for lunch and then meet at the theater for the shows.

Will there be enough tickets for this size group?

GaryP
Wed, 27th Apr 2005, 12:16 PM
It wouldn't be a problem at Schilos, that's why I picked it. Its primarily a business lunch type place and not that busy on a weekend. Its pretty much undiscovered by the tourists that would rather eat at the higher priced places a few feet away on the river. I doubt that everyone will be able to make it for lunch anyway. If anyone wants to show up, I'll be there.

If you posted here, or PM'ed me, and did not vote on the poll, please do so. I'm going to call IMAX today and give them an update on our head count. I can do another update next week so if you are undecided please let us know. They just need to know approx. how many seats to reserve for us. We have already more than doubled the guesstimate I gave them last week.

Thanks

Hey Gary - just an idea, but would it be easier for you for people to pay you through paypal ahead of time? For those that want to, anyway - then you won't have to wait on 70 people to meet you somewhere on the riverwalk right before the shows. It might be a lot less hassle for everyone involved. just a thought! :D

GaryP
Thu, 28th Apr 2005, 08:40 PM
I'll just wait in the movie lobby, grab the cash, and walk over to the ticket booth. I thought about paypal, but that saves me from having to deal with the paypal costs and refunds if someone has something come up at the last minute and can't make it. With a group this size, its bound to happen to a few of us.

Chris
Thu, 28th Apr 2005, 09:14 PM
Gary, when we last did our Sea World trip - I too was told to pay in bulk. After having the $ for about 20+ people it was turning into entirely too much cash in my hands so I kindly asked the lady at the cash register if she could just accept payment from the individuals instead of a lump sum... and she did with a smile. :)

So i'm sure management will tell you one way but the cashier will do the customers bidding. :D

A few of us are going to be eating lunch at Schilos which is a block or so away from the theater on Commerce St. I plan on being there by 12:00. Please try to have as close to exact change as possible as I will have to collect money and pay as a group.
