That is some nice algae and macroalgae in the background. What is that macroalgae called that looks like blister packing material?

Thats Valonia. It's a neat macro, it can grow into enormous colonies. I've seen football sized clumps of it before.
Its got a good strategy for reproduction. Each ball is a single cell with many nucleii, ie coenocytic. Each nucleii can form a spore that can reproduce the entire plant. So as the cell matures, it bursts and spores can spread to a new location.

Thanks guys! This is an Organ Tort that I got from a local reefer. I've also got a California tort that is a darker blue.
These torts really are my favorite! too bad they grow so slow.

I like that Oregon tort! Interested in a trade? I toasted the mites and will re-toast next week.

Very sweet tort. Yummy!
You had better watch the valona though. It can take over a tank. If you don't believe me, come check out my 135 valona tank! :w00t

Valonia... I've never heard it clled that but it tried to ake over my tank once. The rocks I brought over from the 46 bowfront were totally cleaned of them in 3 days by the emerald crabs. just an FYI

My emerald crab won't touch them. I have four varieties of valonia in my tank.

I have at least 8 emeralds, probably more like 12 in the 135... I dont know if they all ate, or just a couple, but they knocked out a bunch in a very short amount of time!!!

Hmmm, Maybe I should try a dozen and see what they do.

Actually I would like to get rid of all of the macro for now. My Purple Tang has cleaned out most of the grape caulperia. Now if I can just get the valonia in check. I will be adding a Tunze stream soon and I am hoping that will clear up the dead spots and get rid of the diatoms. Trying to get my tank back to what it was looking like before the crash.

I can only say that whats in that picute is what I had and I had it BAD... It took only a few days for the emeralds to complete rid the place of any traces. I actually have "bare" spots where the coraline has to grow back.

Maybe I can just borrow your crabs for a month or two. You can have them back when they are through. Whatda say? ;)

Foxface will also eat Valonia. Emerald Crabs are picky about what species they will eat or won't eat.
