I will be having a going away party with about 75 people. I wont allow smoking at this get together so I doubt there is any issue with the tank, but it did get me thinking...

Poker night is a smoking night... only about 8 poeple, but it stinks the whole place up. Is there a problem with this and reef tanks?

yes, young fish are looking at you and thinking is acceptable behavior, so soon you have smoking fish then they start selling you corals to support their habit, after that all goes to s.... and no one in the tank is happy, and some how is all your fault :D :D

I don't know if it will bother them but I have 2 air purifiers in my apartment just in case (I don't smoke but there is lots of pollution in San Antonio- not to mention the fact trains like to unload their cargo here onto the streets and into people houses).

Is poker night only once a week or so? IMO, I don't think it would cause problems at that level. Chris and I are both smokers, and haven't noticed any adverse effects, however our tank is in our bedroom, and we don't smoke in there very much. Running a HEPA air filter in your house during the poker nights would likely solve any concerns. I'm sure you've been in people's houses that are heavy smokers - noticed the yellow tinge from the nicotine on drapes, walls, TV screens? Yes, it gets into everything including our tanks.

Not a stupid question at all. Actually, i was wondering the same myself a year ago or so, i used to smoke alot (mid-terms really get me stressed out),so i was wondering if the smoke would affect the tank. I logged into reefcentral and found a thread about this couple who had a get together with some people, a party, and everybody was smoking and what not, but anyays, the owner of the tank said that he noticed changes in the CO2 levels and other parameters with everybody smoking there ..lol, dunno if its true or not..

I'd be more worried about booze and beer getting dumped in by some one thinking the fish want a drink once they've had a little too much.
That or some drunk thinking he/she wants to go fishing.

I saw someone at a party once pour a drink in a guys Oscar Tank. Killed the fish before we could do anything about it.

If smoking is a good excuse for being a lousy reefer, go with it!!! Everything else gets blamed on it, why not something else.

My wife & I smoke in the house A LOT! I run the air intake for my skimmer outside for a fresh air supply - not a bad idea in general due to how "Air Tight" homes are nowadays. Lots of people/pets in the house can also cause high CO2.

I had horrible problems with Ca levels in my old 125g until I supplied outside air to the skimmer.

BTW - My Powder Blue tang has a two pack a day habit ;)

How about a live crawfish at a crawfish boil? "No, they are not little lobster."
