Yeah, I agree with Don, you need to figure out your water level...

maybe your pump is adding more water than your drain can recive. that would drain your sump dry at the same time trying to overfill your tank. if that's the case than slow the pump down. use a ballvalve in between your pump and the tank. hope this helps

i think that is part of the problem..when i add water to the sump it fills up the tank and not the sump and my tank was about to overflow i add to take the water back out

Ok biggger problem then...your pump is pumping too much water for your drains to process. Unless you have some sort of blockage in your drains as Pete asked then as Dan said you will need to put a ball valve on your return pump output to slow down the water going into your tank...or get a smaller pump.

Is this just being set up or has the tank been running and this just started?

exactly pete. so the question is: why is the tank not draining? Is the overflow set too high?
What type of tank is it?
is it reef ready?
what size & who made it?

Did you start the siphon?

Did you start the siphon?
There is no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to water flow loss ;)

The tank is established..it didnt happen until i tried to add water in the overflow box itself this time

I would guess you broke the siphon (overflow box with J-Tubes), or you washed a turbo snail into the siphon or drain pipe.

Then there must be someting blocking the overflow can you check the end of the output?

You probably broke the siphon if you added the water to the overflow box.

I agree ... I was still thinking about the sump from page one. He must have got it fixed and went to work.

I bet that is exactly what I did is break the siphon I knew it. Now if I can only figure out how to redo it...a firend did a neat little trick for me when he set it up and I dont remeber how he did it LOL

Stick a piece of air hose up to the top of the "U" tube and suck the air out.

does it matter which way to should place the air hose and suck from?
Brett Wilson

No, either end. But be careful, it's easy to suck up some salt water causing you to gag, spit it out, and let more air back into the tube only to do it again for the 20th time.
Yeah i've had to do that a few times before. :-p

had the close to the same problem with my tank, was starting to slow down draining into to sump, nothing looked blocked, but the problem stuck around till i cleaned the overflow box and the j tube.. just a little bit of algea, but it was apparently enough to cause the problem...lol when in doubt clean that sucker :blink
