I just changed to a 12 gallon tank. in my new 12gal tank i used water from my 29 gal that was tested good and was about 1 week after water change. i put my fish in there cause i was told it was ok but now my problem is 2 cleaner shrimp just seem like they froze. the fish are fine or it appears to be. i put in the biospira to help. should i take my fish back out and put them in the 29 and do somethign else with the 12 like wait a couple weeks or something? please help

Did you acclimate the fish when you put them in? Add any live rock?

yeah i did somewhat acclumate them. i added live rock that was cured and in my 135 for a couple months now. all the fish are fine and we tested all the water all are in the range they need to be. everything seems to be fine but kinda lost at the moment.

i have always acclumated them by floating them. i never new about dripping them. temp, ph, ammon, nitrate, nitrite, all match the tank they came from.

If you took them out of the 29 with the water you didn't need to acclimate. They went back in the same water they were already in right?

yes the only differnce is 20 pounds of live rock. but it was cured already. i am just kinda in a little of a freak out mode since both my cleaner shrimp are now dead. i was going to put two new true percs in there but i am putting them in my 29 till i am out of my DAMM!!!!!!!! mode. lol

yeah i eel that was getting his but kicked my golden headed moray so i needed to put him somewhere else. this is why i went from a 29 to a 12. the ones i put in the 12 are small fish like a cow fish aprox 1 in. and 1.5" dragon goby, and 1.5 blenny. and a couple crabs emeralds. this is the reason for the change just to keep my black edged moray alive

You know morays get very large right? 29g won't be big enough for long. Were the shrimp in with the cow fish? The shrimp can be a danger to the cowfish because they contract infections on the skin very easy and cleaners can damage the skin cleaning them. On the other hand puffers and cows have been know to eat cleaners.

yes i knwo the eel wil get way to big but he was on the way to death do to a golden headed moray. so now my eel is getting better so it isnt the permenat home of my black edged. my cow fish is aprox 3/4 in long and there is no puffer in with the cleaners. but i do apprieciate the info cause i didnt know that about the cows and cleaners.

If you waited one week before putting anything in, then you had to fully acclimate the shrimp. The water and temp would no longer be the same in a new tank after a week. If you had put the water in and moved the shimp at the exact same time, then you would not need to acclimate. Cleaners are amoung the most sensitive to any slight change and there is no way you could keep the salinity and alkalinity the exact same between an established 29 and a new 12 for a week. When you took water from the 29, you would had to have added new water so its already different. Then a week later plunk the fish and shrimp to a different setup? Shock stresses the cowfish and it emits a toxin to add to the difference in water chemistry. The shrimp died due to shock and probably some toxins from the cowfish. I wouldn't put more shrimp in that 12 until some stability in achieved and water changes are done. Kinda small for two shrimp it seems to me.

I know this sounds weird, I went through 4 cleaner shrimp before I realized a neon dotty back was plucking there eyes out. And thats all he would do. I would come in the morning see my dead shrimp like he was froze up with nothing wrong with him. I thought they had died naturally? Besides this issue I have never lost a shrimp, they should be very hardy.

found that in the tank move i put my cowfish in first then the shrimp. from what a couple people have said is that the cowfish is killing them and i watched him do it just a little bit ago. so thanks for the responses and now i know why they are dieing
