Hey guys, I am considering a whitecheek tang / gold rim tank.
Does anybody have any experience with these fish? Any feedback is appreciated.
Thanks
Here is a pic I took from RC.http://gallery.consumerreview.com/webcrossing/images/000_2850.jpg

I dont mess with Acanthurus, IMO they are ick magnets.

Whitecheek tangs are beautiful fish but can be very aggressive towards tankmates. I had one beat the crap out of an 8" tusk.

For a more peaceful version get a Powder Brown (Ancanthurus japonicus).

I have a powder brown - they are much hardier than the gold rim. Not really a peaceful fish , mine is a bully.

The other thing with surgeon fish is they require high O2 levels in the tank to thrive. Strong aggitation in the water or a good skimmer is almost a must, or they will become stressed and get ich. Surgeon are pretty hardy fish in the right parameters.

Add all tangs at once. I did and they get along fine. I added:
3-Yellow
2-Purple
2-Hippos
1-Red Sea Sailfin
1-Achilles
1-Powder Blue
1-Powder Brown

I wanted to add a clown and a orange shoulder but I could not get everything I wanted at the same time. I tried to add an orange shoulder a few weeks after the others were in and it was attacked within secounds and now lives in my fuge. So what ever you get, add all tangs at once.

i dissagree with that statement. I had 3 yellows and a scopas. I then added a purple, who got beat on. Pulled him out, and added 2 at the same time, no problems. Same with my hippo. Add more than one at a time and it works just fine.

I was thinking the same thing alex... I plan on adding more later and I was hoping that would be a way to do it

I have a naso that was added after my first set of blue hippos - naso being about the same size. No problems.

THEN, I added another blue hippo, very tiny - a little larger than my thumbnail. I provided an awesome shelter that only he could fit in and thats where I released him after acclimation. He stayed there and then after a few days, he saw the big ones swim by and took off following them. There were a few bullying issues at first, but only for the first few days. Now he is just one of the gang.

I have had others that were totally skittish though. Just as people, not all fish will have the same attitude so its really up to you to provide necessary shelter (lots of different caves) and carefully observe them for the first few weeks.

BTW, I have 3 regals, naso, and a moorish idol and will sometimes see some white spots that I believe to be ick. I never treat them or get alarmed. I have learned that unless it progresses over the span of like a week or more, its nothing that a cleaner shrimp or 2 won't take care of. I never medicate or QT, but always keep at least 1 cleaner shrimp in the system.

Well I guess it depends on the tang. If I add a clown or sohal that is larger than the other I am sure they will be fine. But I cannot remove fish out of my tank so that is not an option. I do know this, if I try to add another tang that is the same size or small my red sea sailfin and my powder brown will destroy it quick. The others will too just not as fast.

We've got a purple, yellow, chevron and a powder blue. They all get along fine, except now whenever we add a new fish the powder blue is a jerk. We had to get rid of a butterfly b/c he was tearing it apart, and it took him about 2 weeks to stop trying to kill our sleeper gobies (which he still picks on if the mood hits him). Oh yeah he even goes after our coris wrasse...what a jerk. My opinion is that they will decide when enough fish is enough fish, and thats when you get random acts of violence.

Here's a pic I snapped of my A.japonicus. I think I need to set the shutter speed faster to catch this guy - he never slows down.
