Just wondering what others do with "Grown Up" Hermit crabs. When they get big enough to occupy dead turbo snail shells :skeezy should I ditch them?

I have a huge electric orange hermit from samiam that has occupied an empty turbo shell. No problems....yet.

My blue hermit crabs eventually killed all the turbo's and took their shells, they still killed them even when they didn't need the shell.

electric oranges are cool crabs, they are also (possibly) short lived according to one of my books, their life span is about 2 to 3 years, but i have never seen that anywhere else to confirm it. They are possibly my favorite hermit.

One of the reasons I like the dwarf Zebras, I have a few larger than any blue or red leg I have ever seen (granted, I have limited experience) but they have yet to kill a snail for a shell. (course, I have quite a few empty ones from the heat wave for them to choose from.)

I like them alot. I have both E.O. hermits and turbos in the same tank. The hermits have, so far, completely ignored the turbos.

I think that hermits sometimes get a bad wrap on killing snails. I think that sometimes they are just scavenging dead snails and end up taking their shells afterwards. In either case I prefer the smaller hermits such as the blue legs and small red legs. They seem to be better hair and cyano borwsers. I know that Larry was very happy with the way that the blue legs cleaned up his bryopsis outbreak.

My Trigger eats them. He also eats the turbos.

I have two monster EO hermits - besides knocking frags off their "perch", they haven't done anything to harm any fish or inverts. The LH hermits we got from Sam are also getting HUGE at a very quick rate...out of all the hermits we got from Sam, only three of the little buggers were caught munching on a coral - they got relocated to our 'fuge at first, but now inhabit the QT tank. Best suggestion I can make is to have plenty of empty shells in your display in varying sizes so when the hermits get ready to upgrade their "house" they have something readily availb. ;)
BTW, our LH hermits are awesome at cleaning!
