I purchase a Aqualine 60/100 REFUGIUM off of ebay. It takes a submersable return pump (not drilled). What size do you recommend. Or should I drill and install an external pump as heat may be a problem this summer

how many feet are you pumping vertically to return the water to your tank? You need to take Head Pressure into account when buying a return pump. I will bet you will end up getting a MAGDrive though... be careful in your selection though, some of them generate a fair amount of heat.

is there a way you can pump water from the tank to the fuge and let the fuge just overflow back into the tank? how big is the fuge? is it a hang on? or does it set on the floor?

I was going to put the refugium behind and below the tank. Which would make the return 29". It's about the same size as a 10 gal aquarium. It has a hang on overflow. Here's a bad photo of the individual parts

OK, you need to know how much the overflow can handle, OR you need to put a ball valve on the return, so you can throttle back the pump if it's to powerful. Find out how much the overflow can handle and we can get you a pump model! :)

I'm thinking a mag 5 or a pump with close to equivelant output.

Based on the picture, it looks like there's not a whole lot of volume to the return section. A submersible would not only exchange the heat into the water but take up some valuable make up water space, no?

It's that small section on the right that will see the water level drop during evaporation. Not that a pump that size is going to have that much displacement, but it may be valuable. With an auto top-off it wouldn't be an issue.

good point Eric,

Sun, is this going under a stand? any way you could fashion a shelf underneath the tank and raise the fuge up so you wouldn't have as much head pressure? you might be able to get away with a smaller pump then... not really sure. A mag 5 in my 30 gallon, combined with all the other equipment, was the item that pushed me over the hill on heat, and practically destroyed my tank (bleached my anemone and a couple shrooms, eventually lost all sps to it as well. :( (even though the problem had been corrected.)

I was thinking in terms of one of the small PanWorld's. A couple hundred gph is all you need for a fuge.

Your other option is to run a T and a ball valve off your return with your existing pump and have the fuge just return back to the sump. That's what I am currently doing with my under tank fuge. You may have to upgrade your existing return pump to do this.

Ok, drilled the refug. Installed a a 350 gph pump. Problem .... refug return empies causing the tank to over flow. HELP
