To me it Looks like a Amblyglyphidodon aureus, commonly known as a yellow damsel..

You beat me to it! HA!!! I agree, I think it's a yellow damsel!

Yellow Damsel, but the species name is actually Pomacentrus amboinensis, looks to be between the adult and juvenile stages, as it ages, it's colors will fade.

A nasty looking adult

http://species.fishindex.com/photo_33508pomacentrus_amboinensis.html

you can tell it is not Amblyglyphidodon aureus because it is missing the blue spot above and behind the gill, and the tailfin on Amblyglyphidodon aureus is a very sharply defined Y, where as that of Pomacentrus amboinensis is much softer and rounded.

That blue dot by the way, seems to appear only on Pomacentrus, and it appears on the picture of every one I have looked at.

more pics, you can see the blue dot on every Pomacentrus, even going forward to the next page.

(Edit - adding the link would help.)

Maybe it's just me Ram, but I see a blue dot above the gill in the pic!

Maybe it is you :) , that is what I am saying, the blue dot in AlienAnchovies pictures points to it being a Pomacentrus amboinensis, NOT a Amblyglyphidodon aureus.

if your referring to my 'above and behind' while the dot looks as if it appears on the gill (and it does) when you take into account the vast majority of the gills are forward of the dot on the fish, that is why I said behind, but above will do.

I stand by it Pomacentrus amboinensis.

Sorry if my above posts were unclear.

:) I have to admit... I lucked out... I stumbled over the picture on wetwebmedia a few weeks ago and thought it was a pretty cool angel, didn't even notice you had it as your avatar until today! what does the Valenciennes denote, is that a region specific name?

The name behind Genus and species is a variety. Think in terms of a local variation but not enough difference to be its own species.

well, it is found from east Africa to the Hawaiian and Line islands, north to southern Japan, south to Rowley Shoals, southern Great Barrier Reef and Lord Howe Island, Guam in Micronesia; absent from most of central Pacific also found in the Mascarene Islands. :skeezy
