im trying to find out what kind of skimmer to use. I have been thinking of using a HOB refugium. I have a skimmer that has to be plump in line but i dont know how to set it up. I prefer somthing simple. Will a hob do just as good as one that is plumbed in line?

In order to answer your question accurately please describe your set up because that will determine what size/type of skimmer you will need...ie the size of your tank and what livestock you plan on keeping.

Its a 90 gallon tank. will be reef setup with a little of every thing as far as corals go and some reef safe fish. I have a sump that holds about 30gallons of water. 4inch sandbed. Here is the skimmer i have now but i dont know how to set it up. I know i can either use the venturi air intake method (which the sump is sort of setup for) or i can use the beckett piece i have. I just dont know how to set it up.

That skimmer looks like it will work just fine. Do you have the other parts to it?

Ok...IMO your set will require a skimmer that can handle a moderate BIO-load in which I do not feel a HOB will cut it. That DIY skimmer looks like it has potential but it needs more parts and hopefully you have them. If you don't have the parts and you want an in-sump skimmer that works great and is simple then check out the poseiden venturi skimmer that I used to have on my 100g. I bought one on e-bay from this guy and was extremely happy with the price, and performance of his products. Tell him that Donavin Harkin from San Antonio sent you and he should give you a discount.

That via aqua looks ok but if you are not going with the becket you have then spend the extra few bucks for the poseiden, you won't be disappointed.

here are some pictures of the sump - if you look at the left side you will see a pvc pipe sticking straight up. it is there for are injection. the inline sump is suppose to pull water and air in. (thats one way to do it)

Well it all depends on how the diy'er was going to attach everything to the box. Is the box complete with a bottom?

How did you get this skimmer? Do you know who built it? It kind of looks like someone was building a fairly beefy skimmer and then bailed mid-project. If you can finish it off, you might end up with a MUCH better skimmer than the ones you've mentioned buying. OTOH, maybe it won't work at all, or will leak like a seive! (always looking on the bright side :lol ) You won't know until you either finish it off or find someone to do it for you. There are several MAAST members currently taking the MACO acrylic fabrication course; this might be a neat project for one of them. You should offer to pay whoever does it, of course, but I bet it won't be much.

it was my uncles for his 200 gallon FO tank. He decided to build one twice the size. the one he is using now is huge! Yeah if any one will finish it ill pay to have it shipped there and for the return ofcourse plus what ever else money is needed.
