Yesterday i stuck by a lion at fin-addict! ouch! It hurt bad!!!! Luckily it was just a fuzzy dwarf, it probably would have hurt worse from a big volitan or something. All we knew to do was run hot water over it. I'm not sure if that helped or not....my finger went numb within just a couple minutes and within prolly 10 minutes all my other fingers hurt and i could barely bend the finger he stung me in. It hurt bad for about an hour and i cold still feel it for 2 hours but after that it went away. I dont recomend getting stung by a lionfish. :roll

Ouch. You are very lucky it wasn't worse.

What were you doing with your hand in the tank?

Tell Felipe he needs to get some meat tenderizer to keep up there for first aid. He works pretty well on most stings.

I was on the wrong end of a spine from my diadema urchin. My fingers were numb for nearly 3 hours and the pain wasn't gone for closer to 6.

That was a bad night. :sick

Gary-I was about to call you cause i knew you'd know what to do.

I've been stuck by an urchin more than once but it has never hurt....

The meat tenderizer (papain) will work for urchins, jelly fish, stingrays, catfish, foxface and man-o-war as well. We never go to the coast without it.

The meat tenderizer breaks down the proteins in the toxin from the spines or stings. Make a poultice (sludge) out of the meat tenderizer and apply it to the site of the wound for about 15 min. After that, run hot water of it as you did before. Use water as hot as you can stand it.

I'll bet you'll be more careful around the lionfish next time. :) It only takes once.

When I used to work at Aquatic Warehouse, i cut myself with a razor while opening a box, anyways, it was bleeding for a few minutes..a customer walked in and wanted a mandarin goby, so i caughty it with the net..anyways, the toxic mucous they produce got inside the cut i had...it burned like a mother!!, it has been one of the most painful things ive ever felt..it didnt last for more than 10 minutes, but it did hurt alot.

First rule of thumb with a lion fish sting, is run it under water as hot as you can take, heat denatures the venom.

I always thought the first rule of thumb was don't get stung.

I beg to differ! I know quite a few people that have been stung by jelly fish and peed on there sting. The acid in the pee neutralizes the venom in the sting somehow.

I was stung in the neck by a Portuguese Man O' War in Portugal at one of my duty stations. The first thing the Doc told us was that ( and I DID NOT DO IT) if someone had peed on my neck, it wouldn;t have swelled up and hurt so bad. ANyway, I took it like a trooper, and almost died!

I'm not so sure meat tenderizer works on injected venoms. They tend to diffuse into the blood stream instantly.

I prefer the hot water and walk around the rest of the day complaining technique. Its medically documented you know.

But peeing on it couldn't hurt, Madonna.

Sean have you ever been stung by a lion?

Ping

Lionfish are members of the Scorpaenide family and are perpetrators of piscine stings. These include (lionfish, scorpionfish, zebra fish, stonefish). "Lets just say critters with spines that sting". These stings vary according to species, with a progression in severity from the lionfish (mild) through the scorpionfish (moderate to severe) to the stonefish (severe to life threatening).

Without going into a long diatribe, the treatment for Scorpainide stings is immersion in nonscalding hot (upper limit 113F or 45C) water for a minimum of 30 minutes. Recurrent pain may respond to a repeated hot water treatment. Post hot water treatments related to protein behavior, meat tenderizer and green papaya have shown to be effective.

Urine, due to its ammonia content will work as a treatment for invertebrate injuries. However a soaking in acetic acid 5% (vinegar) is the preferred treatment. A meat tenderizer poultice will work as a substitute due to its ease of mobility when away from home.

The class Anthosoa, sea anemones and many coral injuries are also treated with vineger and meat tenderizer. Anyone who may come in contact with any of these creatures should have both readily available as well as access to hot water.

Peter K.

And it should be unseasoned meat tenderizer.

Nope, that sucks man. Everyday I forget that the dwarf is in that tank, now I will remember! Yeah, he is really camo among those rocks.

It also would be wise to seek immediate advanced medical care if the injured person appears intoxicated or is weak, vomiting, short of breath or unconscious. These may be signs and symptoms that you are having an allergic reaction to the poison or the injury has become life threatning.

If you are out of the country (USA) you can contact DAN (Diver's Alert Network) and they have doctors on staff 24x7 and will provide help if needed. It also would benefit you to have a non-diver policy from them if you are planning on a trip outside the USA and will be engaged in any water activities.

For more info on DAN or venomious creatures, visit their webite at http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/.

Or you could just leave it alone and ignore it. I got stung (while body boarding) in hawaii by about 6 man of wars (hate those things) and i just take them off and ignore them. I guess after awhile you get used to them and they dont really bother you. They burn at first but after awhile you almost never notice them on you the next time you get stung...well thats ime...never tried meat tenderizer ill keep that in mind on next time i get stung.
