I've noticed that the messages I send don't go directly into the sent box, they go to the outbox for some time.

I'm used to the outbox meaning that it hasn't been sent yet. Are these messages waiting for me to do something or is this just the place they go after sending?

outbox means the person you sent it to hasnt read it yet. Once they read it, it then goes to the sent box. You can also delete it before they read it.
