I have found a bit of info on DIY foam backdrops (http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-08/nftt/). It sounds like it would be a great idea for the look I'm going for.

Since I will have to do this after the tank is up and running I think I'll build a model of the tank out of scrap wood and layer it with plastic or shrinkwrap then foam in some dry LR then cure and rinse before inserting the backdrop.

Thats the plan anyway. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? And opinions or advise? are there non-toxic adhesives that I could use in a tank to set the pieces in place?

I remember a long time ago someone from this area was trying to do a foam type backdrop and were testing it to see if it affected the water parameters. I'm not sure whatever happened with it all. It's an interesting idea, I remember Aquarium Sales & Service had some foam sections they sold at the store when it was open. It looked like it was painted, although Im not sure how that is done. All materials would have to be non-toxic and not leach back into the water column.

Look at aquariumadvice.com,
I was going to do it for my frontosa tank, but opted for more holey rock with the cash i had.... its really easy from what i heard

This one inspired me to think about it:

And this one is a step by step through days, turned out very nicely must i say: http://www.catfishheaven.net/day1.html

Hope this helps, and I might try it again with my new tank, we shall see
