How can I convert dc computer fans into straight plug in ac fans for my canopy?

You need a DC transformer to convert 115V AC to either +5 or +12V DC.

watch those ma's... you can usually take the fan in to the electronics store and they will get you set up with the right one

Not sure where to get one, although you might find an old AT style power supply from a computer that would work. I don't remember if that type will even fire up if it's not connected to a motherboard. I know that the ATX type supplies won't start without a motherboard plugged in.

You can get ATX power supplies to fire up when not connected to a motherboard. Just requires a jumper. Check the amps on the fans and make sure you get a DC power supply that can handle that

It might just be cheaper and a lot easier to get some AC fans. I only paid $10 for a 100 cfm fan online.

OR if you have an old cell phone charger, portable phone base power supply, or other electronic gizmo that uses one of the plug in transformers -- that black, grey or white boxy thingy you plug into the wall!!!! they have the voltage and current stmaped into the plastic....look on the fan and it should say something to the effect of 12vdc 30ma.... you want to find one of those black grey or white boxy things that says 12vdc and any number larger than 30 ma or 30 va or .03 A most of the chargers/power supplies out there are 3, 5, or 12 volts... some are ac some are dc and you need to match the fan voltage requirement...the current rating (ma or A , 1000ma=1A) needs to be at least what the fan is marked but there is no maximum number, it can be a bigger transformer. The fan will only 'draw' as much current as it needs, it just needs to be "big enough".....

and if all else fails go to radio shack down there on Crestwood...is it still on Crestwood...
