I remembered something about this but don't remember details. Were people having problems with the XMs running on electronic ballasts.

I was thinking about selling my 400 watt setup and going with 250s but wanted to find out before buying bulbs.

I had no problems with the 250w and electronic ballast.

The problem was running XDE's on electronic ballasts, at least IceCap ballasts. I think they are sadi to run best on an M59 ballast.

If you havent seen this it's well worth a read... The reason I'm posting this is because after reading the thread I decided to go with the XM's and the ARO ballast. I never heard/read anything but good stuff about both.

This is a comparison (http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=254667) of a ton of different 250w bulbs along with different ballasts. You will find plenty of data for each bulb as well as discussion about all the bulbs & ballasts.

I am running 400w 20k xm's and coralvue 14K's on newer icecap ballasts. Used to run ushio 10K's also. No problems with any of them on the icecap electronic ballast.
