I did my rock work in my 55g last night. I think it looks ok, but it seems like it needs something. Some kind of adjustment or something...... Maybe it just needs fish LOL.
What do you guys and gals think? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

IMO, it needs different shapes of rock..some tonga would look nice, mixed with fiji...just a thought..

Maybe a little more height to it. I think it will look awesome once those shelves are covered with corals

I would like some more height also. Height is just hard to get in a 55g. This will be a FOWLR tank. Thanks for the input.

Rock work is a challenge in a 55g. Looks good. Plenty of swimming room at the top and I like the way you have left openings for fish to swim through.

mix up your flat long pieces with the rounded pieces. It looks a bit stilted as is now. Don't worry about symmetry but mix up the shapes a bit.

Looks good. I think you should get some branch and use that to get height..esp. on the right side of the tank. Put it so it looks like trees...it will add shape too.

Agreed! What you have looks good, but you need some vertical dimension. Not only will it give your tank more height, it will also help your water flow in the upper portion of the tank.

Lets see what I can do about the height thing, and maybe mix that fiji around alittle. I dont think the person who came up with the deminsions for this tank kept aquascaping in mind :huh . Wasnt bad for plants, but not rocks. Lets see what I can do.

Thanks,
Mike

A couple of large (thick) pieces of Tonga Branch would look awesome!

Well...... I took it all out and laid it on a garbage bag, and then rearranged everything. I was doing a REAL good job and keeping the sand from being stirred up....... Until the last rock I placed. I was moving it into place when I knocked over one of the power heads right into the sand >_< . I'll let the dust settle and post somemore pics tomorrow.
I think I did a better job this time. It looks alot more random. The highest point is about 3/4 of the way up, just to the right of center and kinda tappers down from there, with a few pieces sticking out here and there.

Settleing down quicker then I thought. Heres one, not crystal clear, but good enough to get the idea.

A thin layer of larger sand particles (1-2 mm) would help the sand problem. We were in Austin Aquarium sunday and they got a deal on some stuff that looked pretty good. It was $45 for a 50 lb. bag. They said it was totally dust free. It was not from one of the regular suppliers like CaribSea and came in large bags. They are also selling it by the pound for $1/lb.

OK here is a clear pic of the new rock work. I like it better, I will probably add a few more piece of small rock later on.
